THE POINTS OF LIGHT FOUNDATION MAKES NEW STRIDES TO HONOR 9/11 VICTIMS THROUGH VOLUNTEER SERVICE
Supports One Day's Pay as Extension of Successful Unity in the Spirit of America
Washington, DC (July 14, 2004) The Points of Light Foundation & Volunteer Center National Network today announced that One Day's Pay, (www.onedayspay.org), which advocates establishing 9/11 as a national day of voluntary service, has been added to its list of Seasons of Service calendar dates. As a result, by visiting the newly designed www.1800VOLUNTEER.org or calling 1-800-VOLUNTEER, potential volunteers can find ways to give back to their communities and honor those who perished as a result of the September 11 attack.
"As a founding co-sponsor of One Day's Pay, we are elated that so many other organizations are joining in the effort to honor those lost, and to raise the country's volunteer rate above the current 63.8 million adults," said Robert K. Goodwin, President and CEO of the Points of Light Foundation. "We are confident that our 1-800-VOLUNTEER.org site and toll free number will make it easy for those who wish to spend a day on or around September 11 volunteering. They can easily connect with one of our more than 360 Volunteer Centers across the country using either of these services."
Seasons of Service (www.pointsoflight.org/programs/seasons), sponsored and promoted by the Points of Light Foundation, is a portfolio of national opportunities for people to volunteer for service projects and activities throughout the year. More than 20 million people volunteer each year to be part of the Seasons of Service-a year-round action plan to illustrate how a single day of service can grow into an ongoing habit of helping communities. Each day of service is sponsored by a national organization and focuses on a theme that targets a specific group. The Seasons of Service calendar dates for the remainder of 2004 are: One Day's Pay, September 11; Kids Care Week, October 17-23, 2004; Make A Difference Day, October 23, 2004; and National Family Volunteer Day, November 20, 2004.
"We also see One Day's Pay as an extension of the Unity in the Spirit of America (USA) Initiative, the nation's first call to action for men, women, and children to coordinate volunteer projects in honor of those who lost their lives as a result of the terrorist attacks on September 11," said Goodwin.
The USA initiative, which kicked off in June of 2002 and ended during National Volunteer Week in April of 2003, resulted in 500,000 people doing 5,000 volunteer projects across the U.S. in honor of the 500 individuals listed on the USA Web site (www.usa.pointsoflight.org). Projects were conducted in every state: Florida had the most projects with a total of 454; California engaged the most volunteers, totaling more than 45,000.
Sponsored into legislation by Senators Debbie Stabenow (D-MI) and Jon Kyl (R-AZ) and signed by President Bush on January 10, 2002, the USA initiative urged Americans to pledge and conduct volunteer projects in their communities as "living memorials" to those lost on September 11. The Points of Light Foundation & Volunteer Center National Network coordinated the initiative, in partnership with the Corporation for National and Community Service.
Both DisneyHand, worldwide outreach for The Walt Disney Company, and Ronald McDonald House Charities served as lead partners and committed financial support to the initiative, as well as use of their marketing resources and channels for raising national visibility of the USA initiative.
