Gwen Haynes
VISTA, Interfaith Initiatives
202-729-8261

For the next year, Gwen Haynes will be working with the Faith team to tap into the large pool of volunteers within faith communities and promote and build faith and community partners for various Seasons of Service Days. An AmeriCorps*VISTA (Volunteers in Service to America) member, Gwen will take a lead role in Faith Institute Day at this year's National Conference in Washington, D.C.

Prior to the start of her AmeriCorps*VISTA service, Gwen spent nine years working in the public relations field for organizations such as Fleishmann-Hillard, and also a children's association. Though the former PR professional describes herself as "painfully shy," her outgoing, bubbly personality has already become her trademark during her short tenure with the Points of Light Foundation.

Born and raised in Portsmouth, Va., Gwen currently lives in Bowie, Md. with her husband John Haynes III (Trey). The happy couple has been married for four years. In her spare time, Gwen enjoys reading. Her favorite book is Cane River by Lalita Tademy. She says, "If you want to stay a part of my life forever, buy me a book."

Gwen serves on the board of Washington Women in PR and is an active volunteer with organizations such as the Workforce Organization for Regional Collaboration and the American Heart Association. Her greatest professional accomplishment to date is becoming a VISTA and working with Interfaith Initiatives at the Foundation because, she says, "the position allows me to do what I want to do."

Katherine Watier
Director of Marketing and Sales
202-729-3231

The 1-800-Volunteer.org team recently welcomed Katherine Watier as Director of Marketing and Sales. She manages marketing and public relations for the 1-800-Volunteer.org program and works to generate new sales and customers for the system.

Prior to coming to the Points of Light Foundation, Katherine worked as the Marketing Communications Manager for United Telecom Council (UTC), a trade association for the IT and telecom employees at utilities. Prior to UTC, she worked at Youth Service America as the Field Manager for National Youth Service Day.

In 2003, her work with the Lead Agencies doubled the number of volunteers engaged and the number of media impressions and coverage for NYSD.

Katherine has a masters degree in Technology Marketing and Business from Georgetown University and her graduate thesis focused on consumers' interest and potential adoption of wearable computers. She received her B.A. from Hampshire College in Amherst, Mass. in Social Psychology. She is originally from Union, Maine, and lives in Chevy Chase, Md.

Katherine became involved in volunteering at the age of seven when she joined 4-H, started running volunteer programs and managing conferences at age 13, and founded a rainforest preservation program at age 16. She is a die-hard dancer of 24 years, and sings with the Washington Women's Chorus.
