Businesses of all sizes and industries are submitting nominations now for the 2005 Awards for Excellence in Workplace Volunteer Programs, the only national award given to companies with exemplary workplace volunteer programs . This prestigious award has been presented by leading national figures including former President George Bush, Secretary of State Colin L. Powell and Cokie Roberts.

The Awards for Excellence - sponsored by the Points of Light Foundation - honor the overall employee/retiree volunteer effort of businesses, including the actual community service projects and the program policies and company vision that support those volunteer activities.

Our Recognition department is currently accepting nominations for this year's Awards for Excellence in Workplace Volunteer Programs. Any business with an exceptional workplace volunteer program is strongly encouraged to apply* - self-nominations are accepted.

Last year's recipients were GE, KPMG, State Street Corporation and Tucson Electric Power Company. Combined, these four companies engaged over 67,000 employees in more than one hundred million hours of volunteer service in 2002. Their total contributions are valued at more than $1.7 billion. Learn more about their volunteer programs and what their senior managers are saying about the importance of volunteering.

"There isn't a problem in America that we face that caring citizens, including corporate citizens, aren't addressing," former President Bush said in presenting the Awards for Excellence in 2004.

Past award recipients report that they received local media coverage and were able to leverage the award for external marketing and public relations opportunities. Additionally, most recipients found that winning this award positively impacted employee morale and boosted participation in their volunteer programs. According to Salesforce.com, a 2002 award recipient: "Winning the award was a very powerful experience for Salesforce.com. Our employees took direct pride in the acknowledgement of their hard work and are now motivated to do even more."

The 2005 Awards for Excellence will be presented before thousands of nonprofit, business and public sector representatives at The National Conference on Volunteering and Service in Washington, DC, August 4 - 6, 2005.
