As the new Disaster and Homeland Security VISTA, Kate primarily helps VISTAs in the field get all the information and resources that they need to do the best work they can. She graduated in May 2006 from Earlham College in Richmond, Ind., with a B.A. degree in European History.
Kate’s goal is to go to Graduate School in Library Science when she finishes her VISTA term. Originally from Silver Spring, Md., Kate is currently living in the house where she grew up. When not working, she likes to dance and is currently taking ballet classes and hopes to start ballroom classes soon. She also claims to be a film buff: “I love to go to the movies, and if I could, I’d go every weekend.”

Elizabeth Margarita Shapiro

Elizabeth is the new Training and Events VISTA for the Outreach team. She recently graduated from the University of California, Santa Cruz with a B.S. degree in Social Anthropology and a minor in Art History. After graduating, she moved back home to Los Angeles to work for a local newspaper. While attending Santa Cruz, she developed a passion for social justice issues, which eventually led her to work for the Points of Light Foundation. When asked what has been her greatest accomplishment to date, she cites her experience as a Mentor Residential Assistant. “Through that leadership program I was able to plan conferences and events that addressed racism and privilege issues,” she says. She currently lives in Washington, D.C. In her free time, Elizabeth likes to run and make arts and crafts.

Gabriela Stiteler
Americorps*VISTA, Strengthening Families and Youth At-Risk

As the new Strengthening Families and Youth At-Risk VISTA, Gabriela is responsible for overseeing the program development of 27 VISTA volunteers. She provides resources and research grant opportunities, plans and facilitates conference calls, compiles quarterly reports and provides general office support. She is also working with Kids Care to re-vamp the FamilyCares Web site, which includes writing project descriptions. She is also compiling a resource guide for field VISTAs that will cut back on the initial transition time. She earned a B.A. degree in English from Oberlin College. Originally from Pittsburgh, Pa., Gabriela currently resides in Washington, D.C. In her spare time, she likes to play soccer and racquetball, read, listen to “good” music and travel. |

Daniel Tutt
Americorps*VISTA, Faith-Based and EITC

As the content lead for the faith-based and EITC Americorps*VISTA, Daniel Tutt provides technical assistance to VISTAs. He is also very active on the outreach team, the faith and service task force and the faith-based work at the Foundation.
Before coming to the Points of Light Foundation, Daniel worked with various interfaith initiatives in Washington, D.C. He has been primarily focused on grassroots organizing, media and public relations, and leadership in several different capacities. His academic background is in the humanities, and he hopes to continue his studies after his term of service at the Foundation.
When asked what has been his greatest professional accomplishment to date, Daniel cites his leadership with the 9/11 Unity Walk. Dan was given the opportunity to take the idea of the Unity Walk and form an organization, a larger community and a dynamic experiential program guided by a unique consensus model of decision making. The event was broadcast on more than two dozen stations including the Washington Post, Al Jazeera, CNN International, the BBC and NPR.
Originally from Portland, Ore., Dan currently lives in Washington, D.C. When not at work, Dan likes to spend his weekends exploring Rock Creek Park and finding new coffee shops. He also loves spending time near the Potomac River, hiking and just being in the woods. |
