Change is the only constant in our lives, in our work and in our relationships. And yet, it is the one challenge for which we never receive formal training or skills development. As I take on the responsibilities of Interim CEO for the Points of Light Foundation, I am struck by how it can sometimes be difficult to see the opportunities that are inherent with change.
The Foundation has been given a tremendous opportunity to examine the current state of the volunteer sector, to reflect on what we do well and to consider what we can be doing better to engage every citizen as a volunteer in their communities.
In meetings with our Volunteer Centers, our business and corporate partners, Connect America and others in the volunteer sector, I am impressed by the commitment, dedication and determination of everyone in our organization and its partners. Our members are seasoned, savvy and astutely aware of the needs in their communities and the possibilities that face us in the future.
Our challenge at the Points of Light Foundation is to identify the tools and resources that capture the effective practices in our field and to create the framework to ensure that these resources are made available as broadly as possible.
As we consider consolidation and the possible merger with Hands On, our focus should be on the goal of universal volunteer participation and how we can achieve that change through our work.
My goal is to make the volunteer sector and our Foundation stronger as a result of this process. I promise to listen and to learn from you as we work together to be all that we can be in pursuit of our mission and on behalf of those we serve.
