ATLANTA (Sept. 22, 2009): University of Phoenix is answering the Presidential call to service through a partnership with HandsOn Network to help develop a new nation of volunteer leaders. With their experiences, resources, online learning platform and commitment to service, University of Phoenix will partner with HandsOn Network to transform the capacity of people to take action and self-organize.




Gear Up for Giving is a month-long series of social media tutorials hosted by the Case Foundation to help non-profit organizations explore the world of social media and its many benefits. These tutorials will help non-profit leaders and volunteers understand how to use key tools and techniques to raise awareness, mobilize volunteers and engage new supporters.

The Case Foundation hopes that the tutorials will be advantageous to non-profit organizations seeking to expand capacity and become more familiar with new technology.




New York’s Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg and other leading mayors from across the country launched Cities of Service, a bi-partisan coalition of mayors working to engage more Americans in the new era of service, on September 11. This group of mayors is asking cities to create innovative plans to leverage volunteers and connect them with volunteer opportunities that truly address their local challenges.




On Friday, October 16, President Barack Obama will join Points of Light Institute and former President George H. W. Bush to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the vision of a thousand “Points of Light,” which catalyzed the modern volunteer service movement, by hosting a presidential forum on community service at the George Bush Presidential Library and Museum at Texas A&M University.




At the conclusion of 2003 and leading into 2004, I began to search for opportunities that would allow me to transition out of my career in finance. I wasn’t quite sure what I would end up doing. After researching my options, I settled on a position as an AmeriCorps member with Hands On Atlanta, a non-profit organization focused on addressing critical needs of the Atlanta community.
