Daily Point of Light #4266, Karen Benson

Karen Benson continues to be instrumental in helping the state of Missouri recover from tornadoes, flooding, and severe weather – and she donates her time and expetise for free. Karen has a passion to serve those in need at their most vulnerable times after disaster strikes, and she is a leader in providing strong disaster case management training across the state. Karen, who lives in Mount Vernon, Missouri, has been a key member of the Missouri State Voluntary Organizations Active in Disaster movement for many years, serving in multiple roles. She is a case advocate with the United Methodist Committee on Relief; the Chair of the Governor's Council on Disability; the prviate sector Chairperson of the Government, Faith-based & Community Partnership; and the Missouri Conference Coordinator of the United Methodist Disaster Response. She leads an organization of federal, state, voluntary and faith-based organizations in planning for all phases of emergency management.  Karen was also instrumental in forming the Special Needs Population Task Force in Missouri. She now serves on its steering commitee and volunteers as the Statewide Casework Executive for disaster response in Missouri.  Karen's leadership has touched hundreds of volunteers in the state and has been a multiplier of good. She is no stranger to volunteerism and has a long track record of giving her time and experience to aid Missouri families in recovering from disaster. Points of Light Institute honored Karen with a Daily Point of Light Award for her commitment to service.
