Daily Point of Light #4364, Joe & Elaine Griswold

Posted by Points of Light Institute
Joe and Elaine Griswold were inspired to help the children of Uganda, Africa, on an unexpected tour of a government-sponsored village school. Since the tour, the couple has co-founded two non-profit organizations: Tree of Life Ministries in Uganda and Real Partners Uganda in the United States. The Griswolds, two retired teachers, have now devoted their lives to Ugandan children and have brought hope to the community through the Mustard Seed Academy in Lukaya, Uganda, which serves 300 children from age 3 to 13. The Mustard Seed Academy has a small class size and well-educated teachers and equips its students with good health care.  A medicinal garden helps improve the kids’ nutrition,  providing a stronger resistance to common diseases such as, malaria and typhoid.  Most children of this community would not attend school because they lacked funds for school fees and uniforms. The headmaster reports that Mustard Seed students are the happiest and healthiest children in town. As well as educating the students, the organizations are teaching the staff budgeting and strategic planning. The teachers at Mustard Seed Academy are graduates of Ugandan colleges. The school also is a model for sustainable development. In building the campus, interlocking, stabilized soil blocks were used rather than bricks baked with firewood,  which results in less deforestation and pollution. The Griswolds visit Uganda twice a year at their own expense, often with volunteers to oversee activities, bring resources,  and give encouragement. When in the United States, the Griswolds work nearly full-time to publicize the needs and successes in Uganda and manage the organizations. Mustard Seed Academy is making a difference to more than the 300 students. It has become a resource for other schools in the area and is serving as a model of sustainable development. The Griswolds are making an impact in their global community.
