Friends,
In a few days we will celebrate the 25th anniversary of the holiday recognizing the extraordinary life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. It was Dr. King who asked us, "Life's most persistent and urgent question is: 'What are you doing for others?'"
This question has never been more relevant to us individually and as a society. Points of Light Institute is answering this call in a variety of ways. One hundred thousand volunteers will join in 1,500 projects through HandsOn Network for the Martin Luther King Holiday; a sampling of local events on Monday, January 17 include:
· Greater DC Cares, supported by Target, will lead 300 volunteers and Members of Congress in MLK Day discussions and preparation of literacy and warming kits at Tyler Elementary School in addition to over 2,000 volunteers that will serve at 30 sites across the region all focused on education and homelessness.
· Hands On Atlanta will host a full day of activities to include: a Freedom Rally, Community Conversation Forums, an Oxfam Hunger Banquet and a food drive/packing effort to feed 10,000 metro-Atlanta families. Over 800 AmeriCorps/VISTA members and more than 2,000 metro-Atlantans are expected to participate in the day's events.
· Chicago Cares will engage 3,000 adult and student volunteers in meaningful service projects as part of the Celebration of Service on January 15. Community members will join employee volunteers from Kraft Foods and high school volunteers from the Chicago Public Schools Service Learning Initiative in more than 40 community projects reaching seniors, schools, children and adults with disabilities. The day begins with a lively opening ceremony featuring Mayor Richard M. Daley and successful author and entrepreneur Chris Gardner, whose life story was the inspiration for the movie The Pursuit of Happyness.
This year Points of Light has also added several new additions to our Day of Service. Inspired by the legacy of Dr. King, this Sunday, January 16, national civic leaders and celebrities will host America's Sunday Supper at the Newseum in Washington, DC at 6:00 p.m. EST. This event will be broadcast live via Livestream to millions of homes around the globe.
America's Sunday Supper, sponsored by Kraft Foods, will feature panelists Arianna Huffington, co-founder and editor-in-chief of The Huffington Post; Legendary Olympian and UN Ambassador Carl Lewis; Barton Seaver, Esquire Chef of 2009 and National Geographic Fellow; Former NBA All Star, Dikembe Mutombo; S. Leo Chiang, Producer/Director of "A Village Called Versailles"; Michelle Nunn, CEO of Points of Light Institute; Robert Egger, Founder and President of the DC Central Kitchen. The Supper will be moderated by Fox News National Political Correspondent and author, Juan Williams.
During America's Sunday Supper, HandsOn Network will weave together service and dialogue and capture some of the energy of its network of 250 affiliates and 70,000 nonprofit partners. HandsOn Network will host hundreds of Sunday Suppers and Community Cinemas in communities across the country.
Community Cinemas, a partnership with Independent Television Service, Campus Kitchens Project, and North Carolina Campus Compact, and HandsOn Network will support cross cultural civic dialogue as a critical avenue for social change by bringing documentary film, reflection, and service to over 30 campuses, faith based and nonprofit organizations across the country.
The Martin Luther King Jr. Day of National Service is a touchstone point for a new generation of service minded people who are creating ripples of change and possibility. As we and thousands of others across the nation sit down to Sunday Suppers, as we head out to volunteer on Monday, let us use our hearts, hands and minds to address Dr. King's "most persistent and urgent question" -- what are we doing for others, how are we making a difference?
