When the next generation becomes this generation

Friends,
We hope that you will read the recent article in the Boston Globe entitled "Volunteering spirit catches fire," which highlights the increase in voluntary action from young people, particularly college students and recent graduates.
AmeriCorps director John Gomperts talks about his belief that the surge in volunteering has to do with the attitudes of the past four presidents, from our Honorary Chair President George H. W. Bush to President Obama.
John shared with the Boston Globe, “I’m not someone who believes people sit around and wait for their president to call them to service, smack themselves in the head with the heel of their hand and say, ‘Damn, this is what I meant to do'....But I do think the constant drumbeat of presidents does lead to different expectations people have of themselves and others. It’s in the air and water now. It is what young people expect to do and want to do and what society expects of them.’’
Leading up to the March 21 Points of Light Institute Tribute Event we will be celebrating the advances of the modern-day voluntary service movement. We see the engagement of so many young people as one of these successes, and we are incredibly excited to see people of all ages include voluntary action in their definition of a successful life.
We hope that you will read the article and then join us in recognizing how far we have come while simultaneously working towards an even better future.
