The Points of Light Institute Tribute event “All Together Now: A Celebration of Service” took place on Monday, March 21st at the Kennedy Center.  Throughout this week there have been various publications and videos produced by msnbc, DC fox news, the associated press, etc. that have highlighted great moments of the night.  The event celebrated President George H. W. Bush and the volunteering movement as a whole- bringing together donors, corporations, armed service members, and volunteers in a special evening to celebrate the power of voluntary action. Celebrity attendees, Garth Brooks, Carrie Underwood, and Reba McEntire, discussed why volunteering is important to them and how it is important for all Americans to give back.
“Giving back, I mean, helping your fellow man, that’s what we are put on this earth to do. You are supposed to figure out what your talents are, and make the best of those; and give back cause we are here to help each other.” –Carrie Underwood
It was truly a bipartisan night that brought together all former Presidents and promoted volunteerism above all else. Clinton shared some nice words about his close friendship with President George H. W. Bush:
“This man, whom I’d always liked and respected and then run against - in a painful campaign in some ways; I literally came to love. And I realized all over again how much energy we waste fighting with each other over things that don't matter.”

Garth Brooks also spoke about this bipartisanship idea on his red carpet interview,
“That’s why we are all here, it’s for each other. . . that’s the only way we are going to get anywhere is together”
On Tuesday the Tennessean featured an op-ed written by Michelle Nunn, CEO of Points of Light Institute, and BrianWilliams, Executive Director of HandsOn Nashville, describing how volunteerism has been instituted in the Presidential values:
“While those before him had promoted national volunteerism programs, President Bush created a turning point with the National and Community Service Act of 1990. The act established the Commission on National and Community Service, the foundation on which President Bill Clinton grew AmeriCorps, President George W. Bush extended the USA Freedom Corps and President Barack Obama signed the historic Edward M. Kennedy Serve America Act, heralding the next phase in voluntary action.”
The event also tied in the current situation in Japan and Ichiro Fujisaki, the Japanese ambassador to Washington, emotionally spoke about conditions in his homeland and thanked America for their help in service:
“We are grateful…Japan must and will come back.  It means so much to us that you are standing with us. . .We will never, never forget it. ”
This special night brought together countries, Democrats, Republicans, and celebrated volunteer service and people who make a positive difference in the world.
