“It was a life-changing experience…you look at life in a different way after these missions.”

Immediately following the Haiti earthquake in 2010, the call went out worldwide for urgently needed supplies and food. Amidst the initial chaos, UPS employees used their expertise and experience to move life-saving cargo to where it was needed.

From Miami, UPS dispatched Health and Safety Manager John Vera, and Training and Compliance Coordinator Abilio (Bill) Torres as part of the World Food Programme’s Logistics Emergency Teams (LET). For six weeks they worked out of an airport in the Dominican Republic, helping to dispatch 607 truckloads of food and supplies to destinations in Haiti on behalf of 52 different organizations.

The earthquake mission was not the first time John and Bill had been called upon to help Haiti. In 2008, after a series of devastating hurricanes there, they spent weeks on helicopters dropping food on mountaintops across the country.

Their efforts during the past several years saved lives in Haiti and in the process transformed their own. To see and hear more about their experiences in their own words, click here.
