On The Importance of Youth Leadership

Setting the stage for a lifetime of service is vitally important to the health of our communities and our nation. Positive, impactful, and fun service projects that can make our nation's youth feel like they can be part of the solution to some of the nation's biggest problems are an important part of solving those problems.

Getting youth involved in service can start at home, not just through service, but by involving youth in conversations about problems that they see every day. Help to support youth's ideas, whether it's raising money for a cause by selling their art or gathering their friends to donate toys to children who don't have any. With a little bit of help, a child's idea can start to change the world.

Service-learning in schools is another important part of getting youth involved in service. Teachers not only get to use service as a tool to teach classroom lessons, but students get to see their lessons in action and the impact that they can make in their community. generationOn, the youth service division of Points of Light Institute, has resources available for parents and teachers to help them make service a part of the lives of their children.

Youth that are participating in service in their communities are being recognized for their service in a big way. On May 26, six extraordinary young people from across the United states were honored as Hasbro Community Action Heroes. They were recognized for their achievements in volunteer service and their contributions to their communities and the world. You can read more about the honoree's achievements here.

The National Conference on Volunteering and Service is right around the corner. You can find out which sessions focus on youth service and education here.
