News Flash: 9/11 Day Launches Dynamic PSA Campaign, Online Tools
The 9/11 Day of Service and Remembrance was established to rekindle the spirit of unity that existed immediately after Sept. 11, 2001, and honor the 9/11 victims, heroes and all those who rose in service in response to the terrorist attacks that changed our nation. This year marks the 10th anniversary of that tragic day and we are inviting all Americans to help us create a permanent and positive legacy through tributes and service.
In support of 9/11 Day, American Express launched the I WILL VOLUNTER Facebook application, powered by HandsOn Network, the volunteer activation division of Points of Light Institute. This new app is designed to connect volunteers across the country to service projects in their communities and can be accessed at www.facebook.com/americanexpress or www.facebook.com/911day.
The move to develop the application is part of American Express' commitment to the 9/11 Day observance. As the lead contributor, its Foundation has given a $1 million grant to help fund large-scale service projects in 20 cities, national education outreach, nonprofit capacity building and citizen engagement in tribute activities.
A new public service campaign for 9/11 Day - fueled by more than $15 million in donated advertising space - also launched this week. The "I Will" campaign can be on television, radio and online, in print and outdoor billboards. The campaign features relatives of 9/11 victims, first responders, military service members and more than 25 celebrities and public figures. Over the next few weeks, the intensity of this national campaign will increase to encourage all Americans to help us reach our goal of one million acts of service.
Through tragedy, the Sept. 11 attacks brought together cultures, bridged differences and united citizens of goodwill around the world in a spirit of unity and commitment. The 9/11 nonprofit MyGoodDeed and HandsOn Network have joined together to commemorate the 10-year anniversary by leading the efforts to reach one million acts of charitable service.
