News Flash: Millions Join Make A Difference Day to Change Communities
Now is the time to join Make A Difference Day, the nation's largest day of community service, on Saturday, Oct. 22. For almost two decades, Points of Light has partnered with USA WEEKEND Magazine to engage what has grown to include more than three million volunteers on this day of service.
This year's media partner, NBC, has featured Make A Difference Day all month on NBC Nightly News, The Today Show and Meet the Press with more than 17.5 million viewers learning about the day and opportunities to serve. NBC media personalities, including Make A Difference Day spokesperson Brian Williams, have written a series of essays promoting the day of service that have been featured in USA WEEKEND. Natalie Morales, Al Roker and Kate Snow have also tweeted about Make A Difference Day and discussed it on the Today Show. On Friday and Saturday, hundreds of volunteers will occupy the Today Show Plaza to promote Make A Difference Day.
Additionally, celebrities including Rosario Dawson, Darius Rucker and Soleil Moon Frye have talked about ways to get involved via Twitter (#mdday11), reaching another 1.7 million people.
More than 50 HandsOn Network affiliates will host signature Make A Difference Day projects on Saturday. Highlights include: HandsOn Greater DC Cares with USA WEEKENDand Citi employees volunteering with U.S. Secretary of Education Arne and Mrs. Karen Duncan and Congresswoman Eleanor Norton; Greater Philadelphia Cares mobilizing more than 10,000 volunteers for Philly Cares Day; and Make a Difference Day sponsor Citi mobilizing more than 50,000 employees in 90 countries on its "Global Community Day." Look for highlighted Make A Difference Day projects in USA WEEKEND on Oct. 16.
With support from Newman's Own, the Gannett Foundation and the Corporation for National and Community Service, HandsOn Network and USA WEEKEND Magazine will present $140,000 in grant funds to Make A Difference Day projects during National Volunteer Week 2012 at the 2012 Make A Difference Day Awards Luncheon in Washington, D.C.
