Volunteer and Unite in Service This January to Honor Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

This year, in partnership with Target and the Corporation for National and Community Service, we will create new and meaningful ways to harness the passion of our nation’s citizens in honoring the memory and promoting the vision of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. on Jan. 21.
With the election over and in the aftermath of another significant weather event, we believe we have a unique opportunity to unite Americans in volunteer service and to issue a call to action to do what we, as Americans, do best – lend a hand, help our neighbors, and build better communities.
President Barack Obama said after being re-elected, “America has never been about what can be done for us. It’s about what can be done by us together through the hard and frustrating, but necessary work of self-government. That’s the principle we were founded on.” Use this call to service to unite and join with millions of Americans in volunteer service to honor Dr. King in January.
Here are some ideas for how you can plan ahead for January:
- Sign up to volunteer at service projects organized by our HandsOn Network affiliates and partners.
- Join Points of Light and Target in service and the national signature project in Washington, D.C. on Saturday, Jan. 19, 2013. Registration coming soon. Contact events@pointsoflight.org for additional information and group registration.
- Join together for America’s Sunday Supper.
