Position Overview
The Points of Light Institute Director , Government and Foundation Partnerships is an experienced, well organized fundraiser with a successful track record in securing revenue from both private foundations and federal agencies. S/he supports prospect identification, research and qualification, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship and supports others' fundraising activities through effective tracking and strong writing skills. The Director will manage Government and Foundation Partnerships support staff, interns and volunteers. Additionally, the Director will facilitate effective collaboration across teams to achieve strong integration between the agencies various departments and business units. The Director, Government and Foundation Partnerships is based in Atlanta. The position's success will help to fuel Points of Lights Institute's capacity to ignite a new spirit of service and civic engagement across the world.

Reporting Relationship
The Director, Government and Foundation Partnerships, reports to the Chief Development Officer. Current direct report is the Manager of Government and Foundation Partnerships. Executives with whom the Director works closely include the Vice President of Corporate Relations, Major Gifts Staff, COO, CFO, CEO and Chief Marketing Officer, and many of their direct reports. In addition, s/he works closely with the Executive Team, Campaign Leadership Cabinet, and Board of Directors.

Position Responsibilities
The Director, Government and Foundation Partnerships maintains primary oversight of all foundation and government relationships throughout the agency with special consideration for The Corporation for National and Community Service. The Director possesses exceptional management and organizational abilities related to the daily execution of government and foundation fundraising. The Director will possess superior skills in the following areas: oral and written communication; research and prospecting; team-based project management and project design facilitation.

Qualifications and Education:
  • Revenue Development: The Director manages pursuit of the annual fundraising goals associated with foundation and government prospects. S/he assembles and leads cross-functional staff teams to build the most competitive response possible for various grant opportunities. S/he interfaces with and engages board members participating in the Resource Development Committee as applicable/needed in conjunction with the Chief Development officer and CEO. S/he supports the Executive Office and Chief Development Officer with task management, briefing documents for donor meetings, and meets with and cultivates new "asks" with donors. The Director generates innovative approaches to traditional appeals and ensures that the acknowledgement process is thoughtful and timely - thank-yous generated within 48 hours of any gift received.

  • Departmental Development: The Director manages and coaches direct reports toward excellent performance, professionalism, achievement of revenue goals, collaboration, innovation, organizational engagement, management of administrative aspects of the job, and professional growth. In doing so, the Director positions the team as an organizational resource. S/he ensures agency values are consistently upheld within the team and rewarded accordingly.

Traits Leading to Success
  • Professional Experience
    • A bachelor's degree.
    • A minimum of 7 years of relevant experience with demonstrated success in government and foundation fundraising.
    • Previous supervisory experience.
    • Excellent written and verbal communication skills; ability to infuse creativity, innovation and insight into prospect cultivation and proposal development.
    • Skilled prioritization and multi-tasking, working efficiently and evaluating a wide variety of considerations.
    • High attention to detail.
    • Excellent computer skills including database management.
