FAITH-BASED PROGRAMS

Faith VMTS Module
The Points of Light Foundation & Volunteer Center National Network is currently working with the Faith and Service Task Force to develop a faith-based module for Volunteer Management Training. Congregations and faith-based organizations mobilize millions of volunteers in a wide range of service, though they often do not have access to information on volunteer management principles. This volunteer management series focuses on the unique needs and opportunities of faith-based volunteer programs. The module will include detailed descriptions of how to inform, encourage and fully utilize congregational volunteer leaders. The faith-based VMTS will provide the strategies for success in the unique faith-based volunteer environment. This project is slated to be completed and ready to present at our national conference in July.

The Andrew Cader Foundation Faith Grant
In the wake of Hurricane Katrina the City of New Orleans struggles to rebuild itself. Most of the work has been carried out by volunteers, through creative and sustainable community organizing. The Points of Light Foundation & Volunteer Center National Network, in partnership with Volunteer Center of New Orleans, other volunteer centers, Interfaith Works and The Andrew Cader Foundation, have extended a grant to the American Clergy Leadership Conference (ACLC) in order to fight “Katrina Fatigue”. One hundred and fifty youth volunteers from neighboring states will convene with local community members to learn about what faith groups are doing to help their own communities and each other. The youth will participate in multiple service projects coordinated by Volunteers of America Greater New Orleans, Hand-On New Orleans, City Year, J-Serve, and the Salvation Army. Partners and participants will have the opportunity to visit New Orleans houses of worship and learn about diverse cultural and religious traditions.

Martin Luther King Day of Service
Americans across the country celebrate Dr. Martin Luther King's life and work. Hundreds of thousands of Americans remember and memorialize Dr. King by participating in service projects in their communities. Together, they honor Dr. King's legacy of tolerance, peace and equality by meeting community needs and making the holiday a day on, not a day off. This year's event was held on January 15 th . 36 grants were given to Volunteer Centers to promote projects across the country. To find out how to participate in the King Day of Service, participants can call 1-800-VOLUNTEER or go to www.mlkday.gov .

Faith Events at the National Conference
In recent years, several hundreds of faith and service leaders have gathered as part of the Points of Light Foundation Conference to work on advancing the faith and service agenda. Faith themed workshops offer a forum for discussion of faith and service ideas to strengthen Volunteer Centers.
