Monthly Corporate Round Up: February 2013

Are you a company thinking about expanding your volunteering efforts, looking for new ideas, or wanting to find out about best practices?  Check out the cool projects our corporate partners have been involved in this past month:

  • Belk announced the launch of its 125 Days of Service partnership in Charlotte, NC at its Regional Store Managers Meeting. Belk President and COO John R. Belk shared Belk’s $2M commitment to engaging all of its associates in volunteer projects to partner with us to support over 200 low income schools over the next 125 Days. • Target hosted a “Sunday Supper” in Chicago with us on February 28, with host Israel Idonije of the Chicago Bears and provocative dialogue from Mayor Rahm Immanuel and other Chicago leaders. The luncheon focused on inspiring kids to dream big and reach for their goals and is part of Target’s year-round commitment to bringing together key influencers with differing backgrounds in communities across the country to problem solve around the education crisis. • We hosted our bi-annual Corporate Service Council meeting in New York City at JPMorgan Chase Headquarters, with more than 75 Council members and guests exploring new trends and innovations in corporate volunteer programming.  Close to 20 participants also participated in a Hurricane Sandy response tour and learned more about the work of New York Cares and Points of Light in disaster recovery efforts.
  • Scholastic launched the BE BIG in Your Community Contest with HandsOn Network.  The celebration included a GenerationOn “Party with a Purpose” with 25 kids from the PS 119 school designing and donating dog bandanas for homeless pups at the local ASPCA.
  • The Civic 50, a scorecard for America’s most community-minded companies, hosted a webinar in which the Top 2 ranked companies, Citi and IBM, participated and shared their approach when taking the Civic 50 survey including the dimensions where they scored highest.
  • Points of Light’s Corporate Institute hosted a webinar outlining the Corporate Engagement Awards of Excellence judging criteria with 2012 winner Mondelez International.
  • With generous support from the PwC Charitable Foundation, Inc. and Starbucks Foundation, we're now accepting applications for a second group of entrepreneurs for the Civic Accelerator program. In partnership with Village Capital, we culminated the first cohort of the Civic Accelerator in January, a 12-week boot camp dedicated to boosting early-stage ventures with missions that engage people as part of the solution. The second program will kick off this May and early stage for-profits and nonprofits are encouraged to apply.
