What: Exelis Action Corps, the employee volunteer service program of McLean-based Exelis Inc., will hold its inaugural service event in Alexandria, Virginia on Friday, November 9, 2012. The event will be hosted in collaboration with Final Salute, a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing safe and suitable housing for female veterans.
At the event, local Exelis employees, including CEO & President David Melcher and Brian Orakpo of the Washington Redskins, will work to prepare Final Salute’s newest transitional house, which will house seven female veterans, for its grand opening on Sunday, November 11th. The team of Exelis volunteers will paint all of the bedrooms, living areas and bathrooms. Volunteers will also install fixtures and conduct cleaning and maintenance work.
The event is part of a broader initiative by Exelis employees to address veterans’ needs across the country through Exelis Action Corps. In October, ITT Exelis announced the program, as well partnerships with Points of Light, the world’s largest volunteer service organization, the Corporation for National & Community Service (home to AmeriCorps) and a coalition of more than 55 veteran and military service organizations, nonprofits and government agencies from across the country to launch the Community Blueprint – a national initiative to support the reintegration of returning military service members, veterans and their families.
Together, this coalition plans to regularly undertake similar events across the country.
