FOUNDATION DISASTER PROGRAMMING

HelpinDisaster.org
HelpInDisaster.org is a national website registry and educational campaign for volunteers who want to serve before and during times of disaster.
The site is maintained by 1-800-Volunteer.org, a service of The Points of Light Foundation & Volunteer Center National Network. The Points of Light Foundation is a member of the National Voluntary Organizations Active in Disaster, and is the lead agency responsible for managing unaffiliated volunteers during times of disaster using both web-based tools and leveraging the resources of local Volunteer Centers.
On HelpinDisaster.org, volunteers register their skills and availability and nonprofits that need disaster volunteers can search the database for the skilled volunteers that they need for their recovery effort.
Visitors to HelpInDisaster.org can also learn more about ways they can help in disasters which includes ways to help at home, and what to expect when volunteering in a disaster area.

National Service Disaster Training
The Points of Light Foundation & Volunteer Center National Network is providing training and technical assistance on Managing Spontaneous Volunteers in Times of Disaster through a cooperative agreement with the Corporation for National and Community Service.

VISTA Homeland Security
The Points of Light Foundation & Volunteer Center National Network, through a generous award from the Corporation for National and Community Service, has launched a new initiative that will engage up to 75 VISTAs per year over three years to serve in Volunteer Centers across the country.
VISTAs will recruit volunteers and develop organizational capacity for new or existing programs to meet community needs in one or more of five focus areas, including Homeland Security: Emergency and Disaster.

Youth Ready to Respond
While every disaster is devastating, the response of ordinary people, particularly young people, has been inspiring. Often times, however, these young people have gone untapped as a resource when it comes to responding to disasters.
Through the Youth: Ready to Respond program, the Points of Light Foundation & Volunteer Center National Network is helping young people plan for and respond to the health, safety, and security concerns associated with natural and man-made disasters. Under the program, ten local partnerships are developing and implementing service-learning projects. The two-year program is funded by Learn and Serve America.

Challenge Grant
Through the generous support of the Corporation for National and Community Service, the Points of Light Foundation & Volunteer Center National Network, in partnership with 14 Volunteer Centers, will address the challenges posed by hurricanes Katrina, Rita, and Wilma through effective engagement of Baby Boomer volunteers.  The program will also develop tools and resources that will empower Volunteer Centers to engage community stakeholders in harnessing the energy of Boomer volunteers.  Funding for this project has been awarded through the Corporation’s Challenge Grant program, which was established in 2003 to assist nonprofit organizations to use federal grant funds to secure previously untapped sources of private funds to build sustainable service and volunteer programs in the United States.  All participants are required to provide at least two dollars in private funding for every federal dollar.  The $500,000.00 grant provided by the Corporation will be matched by over $1,000,000.00 in private funding.

Universal Peace Federation—Alliance for Recovery
In September of 2005, approximately $1 million was awarded to 32 volunteer centers across the country for long-term hurricane recovery and for capacity building to prepare for future disasters by the Points of Light Foundation & Volunteer Center National Network (POLF/VCNN). The grant was made possible through the generous support of the Universal Peace Federation (UPF).
