Try these tips to involve employees and their families in volunteering:

  • Design volunteer projects that offer opportunities to heighten the company’s visibility, enhance its public image, and build customer loyalty.
  • Design volunteer opportunities that are aligned with a specific company’s business objectives.
  • Design positions or group projects that can improve teamwork and communication among employees.
  • Suggest to businesses that they ask their retired workers to join employee volunteer groups.
  • Remember that small businesses have a lot to offer. Don’t limit your outreach just to large corporations and formal employee volunteer programs.
  • Find the right person in the company to contact with your request. In a large corporation with an employee volunteer program, an employee volunteer director or community relations staff is usually the contact person. In smaller businesses, contact the owner directly.
  • If you are an employer, provide paid volunteer time to your employees.

Employees might enjoy these benefits to volunteering:

  • Developing skills and advancing professional development
  • Giving back to the community
  • Enjoying the chance to work with other employees on projects outside the workplace
  • Having opportunities to do good while spending time together with their family members
