Stoop Speech
Use a speech like the following when you or other volunteers with
your organization canvass the community to recruit volunteers in
person. You might go door-to-door or appear at a local community
or church meeting. Listen to members of the community and follow
their advice on the best places and times to reach their neighbors.
We do not recommend carrying a clipboard with you as you approach
people. The key is winning the trust of the potential volunteer,
and clipboards can seem too official. Once you've established a
relationship, then you can take notes. Ease into it. If you have
any materials about your project, bring multiple copies to leave
with those to whom you speak.
This speech is
meant to give you an idea of how one might start the conversation.
Once you have someone's
attention and willingness to give you a few minutes of their time,
talk enthusiastically about the specifics of your project. Don't
forget that community members of all ages and genders are key to
making your neighboring project succeed. Mention other community
members who are already involved by name. You never know how many
friends your volunteers may have. It is also compelling to provide
a personal testimony.
Another thing to consider when reaching out to volunteers is how
to write job descriptions for
the tasks that need to be done.
