National Service Disaster Training

The Points of Light Foundation & Volunteer Center National Network is providing training and technical assistance on Managing Spontaneous Volunteers in Times of Disaster through a cooperative agreement with the Corporation for National and Community Service.

The training prepares participants to manage spontaneous volunteers and to assist at a Volunteer Reception Centers that process, screen and manage spontaneous volunteers in times of disaster. The training includes components on disaster terminology and concepts, spontaneous volunteers, volunteer management practices, risk management principles and a Volunteer Reception Center simulation exercise where participants experience the VRC model. It is available in two formats. One is a full-day classroom training. The second combines an online course with a 3-hour classroom Volunteer Reception Center Simulation training.

The training is intended for National Service program participants and staff, State Commissions, CNCS State Offices, Volunteer Centers, and National and State VOAD organizations and is delivered by trainers from Volunteer Centers. Eight programs are scheduled in September, October and November, and more are being added.

Volunteer Centers are encouraged to work with their community and National Service partners to offer this training. The training can be offered free of charge at a location of your choice for 20-80 participants.
