A fence may seem trivial. But to the women and children at the Neighborhood Center of West Volusia, the fence that Chuck Heacock installed means a lot. It allows the children to safely enjoy the butterfly garden and swing set and it ensures the privacy of residents. Chuck Heacock uses his time, resources and skills to help the women and children housed at the Neighborhood Center, a homeless shelter and transitional housing center.

The Boys & Girls Clubs of Metropolitan Phoenix had a plan to combat the increases in juvenile crime, gang activity and drug trafficking that was plaguing the West Valley.   Together with several community partners, they were preparing to tackle these challenges by expanding programs and building three new Clubhouses in these needy areas. However, to be successful in these efforts, the Boys & Girls Clubs needed to increase the fundraising and volunteer efforts of its auxiliary groups.

Rich Mullins has volunteered with the Big Brothers/Big Sisters for the last 29 years. As a Big Brother mentor to eight young men, Mullins has been a male role model in their lives. With weekly one-on-one visits with each child for several years, Mullins assisted the children with their homework and social skills. Because the children’s families could not afford the luxury of a vacation, each child was included in vacation trips with Mullins’ family.

Daily Point of Light #4216, Catherine Aker

Thu, 2010-04-01 11:45 -- Points of Light...
Not all meals are created equal. This is especially true for young children in homeless shelters. Seeing this, Catherine Aker, a shy high school junior, stepped out of her comfort zone, and started The Stone Soup Kitchen to teach homeless kids in her community proper nutrition so they can grow up healthy and strong. While volunteering at a local homeless shelter, Catherine noticed the kids had a poor diet. Although they were getting sufficient calories for their young bodies, it was mostly from junk food, even when healthier food was available.

Daily Point of Light #4206, Neha Gupta

Thu, 2010-03-18 11:07 -- Points of Light...

Embracing her heritage, she spent each birthday giving food and gifts to orphans in India while visiting her grandparents. By age nine, Neha was distraught to learn the orphans lacked the means to acquire proper education.  Understanding the importance of an education and a supportive family to guide one through life, she turned her empathy for the children into action.
