Tue, 2010-07-13 13:34 -- Points of Light...
Hands On Northeast Ohio (NEO) was founded in Greater Cleveland in 2007, and since it’s inception Vi Huynh has been invloved.  As Cleveland is one of the nation’s most impoverished cities, Hands On Northeast Ohio, and Vi’s service, are critical. Vi's has volunteered and supported children at an innovative charter school, as well as dogs at a local animal shelter. Additionally, when he saw a void in Volunteer Leadership in Cleveland, Vi stepped up to lead numerous programs within the community.  Trained as one of Hands On NEO's first Volunteer Leaders, Vi now manages others in service.

Daily Point of Light #4223, Jeannie Gallina

Mon, 2010-04-12 11:48 -- Points of Light...
When people are in an impossible situation, they look for someone to lead them out of their circumstance. However, not even Jeannie Gallina suspected what she could do to help the people of Clay County, FL. By founding The Way Free Medical Clinic, Jeannie found a way to provide healthcare for those with no other resources. Many people in Clay County, Florida were living without access to affordable healthcare or health insurance. Despite being employed, it was not an affordable option for them.

Daily Point of Light #4216, Catherine Aker

Thu, 2010-04-01 11:45 -- Points of Light...
Not all meals are created equal. This is especially true for young children in homeless shelters. Seeing this, Catherine Aker, a shy high school junior, stepped out of her comfort zone, and started The Stone Soup Kitchen to teach homeless kids in her community proper nutrition so they can grow up healthy and strong. While volunteering at a local homeless shelter, Catherine noticed the kids had a poor diet. Although they were getting sufficient calories for their young bodies, it was mostly from junk food, even when healthier food was available.

Daily Point of Light #4208, Kittie Caston

Mon, 2010-03-22 11:18 -- Points of Light...
With a smile on her face, Kittie Caston happily accepts whatever challenges are before her, and she embraces others for their abilities, not disabilities. Why? Being deaf taught Kittie to be non-judgmental and give people with disabilities the opportunity to shine. Wanting others to have that chance at a normal life, Kittie’s 30 years of volunteer service with the Special Olympics in Georgia helps individuals with disabilities learn discipline, team camaraderie and self-confidence.

Daily Point of Light #4207, Nicole Muller

Fri, 2010-03-19 11:11 -- Points of Light...
Any other ordinary 16-year-old high school junior would be more worried about other tasks like what to wear to prom or what college to apply to.  But Nicole Muller is no ordinary 16-year-old high school junior.  Founder of the Neighbors-4-Neigghbors food drive (fall 2009), Nicole has help fill a depleted food bank in Charlottesville, Virginia while maintaining a GPA of 3.96 (out of a 4-point scale) and taking AP and Honor classes.

Daily Point of Light #4205, Grant Reed

Wed, 2010-03-17 10:52 -- Points of Light...
Although he’s still in school to become a doctor, Grant Reed didn’t wait for a diploma to begin helping his community to heal. As a student at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign campus, Grant created the Illini Medical Screening Society (IMSS). IMSS is a student-run mobile health clinic that provides free medical screening service to the underserved and uninsured residents of Champaign County.

Daily Point of Light #4203, Adner Marcelin

Mon, 2010-03-15 10:23 -- Points of Light...
When dealing with the well being of the community, Adner Marcelin has no boundaries. A friend once told him that he could not invest his personal finances in his community. He simply said, “If it will help one person improve their situation, then it improves the community that I am a part of. That’s money well spent.” Adner, 22, strives to make a positive influence in his community. He has mentored young people with Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Big Bend and the NAACP Youth Council to make a difference with others.

Daily Point of Light #4199, Betsy Beckmann

Tue, 2010-03-09 10:13 -- Points of Light...
Betsey Beckmann will literally give you the clothes off of her back.  In fact, she has.  With a smile, she has given a child a coat of hers to keep warm during the brutal winters in the St. Louis, Missouri area.   It is with this same wit and passion that Betsey started and organized Coat-A-Kid, an organization that provides coats to low-income families during the winter.

Daily Point of Light #4197, Alyssa Hersey

Fri, 2010-03-05 10:05 -- Points of Light...
Alyssa Hersey is a perfect example that change can start with anyone, anywhere, at anytime.  A young teen that excels at her school work, Alyssa has used her passion for change to inspire her peers  through her organization USE IT, U can Serve Everywhere, Involve your Talent. Alyssa has been taught the importance of giving back since the tender age of 8.  As she recalls on her website, “My parents have always demonstrated giving back and have shown me and my siblings that volunteering starts at home and there are no efforts too small.”
