Daily Point of Light #4210, Breanna McGowan

Wed, 2010-03-24 11:22 -- Points of Light...
Breanna McGowan has the heart of a missionary. While volunteering at Outreach orphanage in Ghana for Projects Aboard, she genuinely cared for the children. She wondered how much more improved their futures would be if they only had the resources, and even spent her souvenir money on food for the orphanage. Therefore, when she returned to the United States, she had a goal: to make a tangible difference. Breanna’s work in Ghana inspired her to start a foundation called All’s God Children Got Shoes, which sends school supplies and shoes to the children in Ghana.

Daily Point of Light #4208, Kittie Caston

Mon, 2010-03-22 11:18 -- Points of Light...
With a smile on her face, Kittie Caston happily accepts whatever challenges are before her, and she embraces others for their abilities, not disabilities. Why? Being deaf taught Kittie to be non-judgmental and give people with disabilities the opportunity to shine. Wanting others to have that chance at a normal life, Kittie’s 30 years of volunteer service with the Special Olympics in Georgia helps individuals with disabilities learn discipline, team camaraderie and self-confidence.

Daily Point of Light #4207, Nicole Muller

Fri, 2010-03-19 11:11 -- Points of Light...
Any other ordinary 16-year-old high school junior would be more worried about other tasks like what to wear to prom or what college to apply to.  But Nicole Muller is no ordinary 16-year-old high school junior.  Founder of the Neighbors-4-Neigghbors food drive (fall 2009), Nicole has help fill a depleted food bank in Charlottesville, Virginia while maintaining a GPA of 3.96 (out of a 4-point scale) and taking AP and Honor classes.

Daily Point of Light #4206, Neha Gupta

Thu, 2010-03-18 11:07 -- Points of Light...
At a very young age, Neha Gupta learned of the needs of underprivileged children. Embracing her heritage, she spent each birthday giving food and gifts to orphans in India while visiting her grandparents. By age nine, Neha was distraught to learn the orphans lacked the means to acquire proper education.  Understanding the importance of an education and a supportive family to guide one through life, she turned her empathy for the children into action.

Mon, 2010-03-15 10:23 -- Points of Light...
When dealing with the well being of the community, Adner Marcelin has no boundaries. A friend once told him that he could not invest his personal finances in his community. He simply said, “If it will help one person improve their situation, then it improves the community that I am a part of. That’s money well spent.” Adner, 22, strives to make a positive influence in his community. He has mentored young people with Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Big Bend and the NAACP Youth Council to make a difference with others.

Daily Point of Light #4200, Gloria Owczarski

Wed, 2010-03-10 10:15 -- Points of Light...
One of the greatest gifts a volunteer can give is not just a dollar, a lesson, or a bit of their time, but a new feeling or confidence in the person they are helping. Gloria Owczarski’s Day of Beauty does this by beauty treatments to kids with special needs. Using her own experience with the special needs population as inspiration, she has inspired others to do the same. Growing up with a sister with Down Syndrome, Gloria has always had an interest in the welfare of the special needs population. Already a swim couch for the Special Olympics, Gloria decided she could do more.

Daily Point of Light #4199, Betsy Beckmann

Tue, 2010-03-09 10:13 -- Points of Light...
Betsey Beckmann will literally give you the clothes off of her back.  In fact, she has.  With a smile, she has given a child a coat of hers to keep warm during the brutal winters in the St. Louis, Missouri area.   It is with this same wit and passion that Betsey started and organized Coat-A-Kid, an organization that provides coats to low-income families during the winter.
