Daily Point of Light #4207, Nicole Muller

Fri, 2010-03-19 11:11 -- Points of Light...
Any other ordinary 16-year-old high school junior would be more worried about other tasks like what to wear to prom or what college to apply to.  But Nicole Muller is no ordinary 16-year-old high school junior.  Founder of the Neighbors-4-Neigghbors food drive (fall 2009), Nicole has help fill a depleted food bank in Charlottesville, Virginia while maintaining a GPA of 3.96 (out of a 4-point scale) and taking AP and Honor classes.

Daily Point of Light #4197, Alyssa Hersey

Fri, 2010-03-05 10:05 -- Points of Light...
Alyssa Hersey is a perfect example that change can start with anyone, anywhere, at anytime.  A young teen that excels at her school work, Alyssa has used her passion for change to inspire her peers  through her organization USE IT, U can Serve Everywhere, Involve your Talent. Alyssa has been taught the importance of giving back since the tender age of 8.  As she recalls on her website, “My parents have always demonstrated giving back and have shown me and my siblings that volunteering starts at home and there are no efforts too small.”

Daily Point of Light #3987, Elle Bacon

Fri, 2009-05-15 08:56 -- Points of Light...
Elle has been volunteering with special needs kids for eight years and she’s only 16. Over her years as a volunteer, she has coached basketball and bowling among other positions. Elle recognized a need—the special needs basketball team her brother was coaching didn’t have a cheerleading squad.  Elle is currently serving as the cheerleading coach for a special needs squad that goes to the Special Olympics every winter. And at 16, she runs the program singlehandedly.

Daily Point of Light #3974, Corey Castillo

Tue, 2009-04-28 08:50 -- Points of Light...
When many can barely make time for themselves, Corey Castillo, has found time to do something special for others. Already a busy kid, somewhere between marching band, basketball, track, science club, and numerous other activities, Corey Castillo helps the elderly, veterans, and even his peers in his community. One such way was cleaning up a local cemetary. Years of neglect and three major hurricanes had left the Edgerly Cemetary in disarray.

Daily Point of Light 3956, Laura Wysocki

Thu, 2009-04-02 16:01 -- Points of Light...
Laura Wysocki broke her elbow playing soccer and noticed an ad in the paper for volunteers. The program assigns Special Needs students with a "buddy" for one-on-one instruction in the rules of the game of soccer and the spirit of teamwork. Being a buddy to little Gordon is an eye opener for Laura. Born with Down Syndrome and a weak heart, Gordon has undergone two heart surgeries. Gordon does not know anything about soccer, is reluctant to play, and is notorious for running of the field every opportunity he can. After several weeks of cajoling, Gordon attempts to dribble the ball!

Daily Point of Light 3942, Mary Brummet

Fri, 2009-03-13 15:10 -- Points of Light...
Be inspired to serve after reading Mary Brummet’s volunteer story: I volunteer at Council on Aging's Adult day care weekly and encourage other Chain Reaction volunteers to do the same. I serve on the Board of Directors for Council on Aging. I am the President of Chain Reaction (the local teen volunteer center) I serve on the Chain Reaction Advisory Council that meets once a week to better the program.

Daily Point of Light 3930, Hanna Richardson

Wed, 2009-02-25 14:22 -- Points of Light...
Fourteen year old Hanna Richardson has shown distinction through her volunteerism to help the Intracranial Hypertension Research Foundation. Hanna suffers from this chronic illness which is a neurological disorder characteristic of debilitating headaches and is at risk of vision loss. Rather than become discouraged by the lack of a cure, Hanna took the initiative to try to help find a cure. She has continued this crusade since 2004 while continuing to battle frequent pain, fatigue and school struggles.

Daily Point of Light 3916, Haley Lynch and Katie Vahle

Thu, 2009-02-05 13:35 -- Points of Light...
Haley Lynch, age 11, and her friend Katie Vahle, age 12, started a youth volunteer group called H & K’s Service Paws with the goals of providing service dogs free of charge to disabled youth and providing valuable information about service animals to their greater community. Through their annual “Amanda’s Dog Festival” and various fundraising projects they provide children who are visually impaired or physically disabled with independence through the use of highly trained service dogs.
