1987 Community Advocates Found New York Cares

  • In 1987 a group of young adults in New York create New York Cares. The young organization provides a new way for people to make a difference in their community.

  • HandsOn Atlanta based in Atlanta, Georgia is established during this period. The action center experiences phenomenal growth and becomes a model for volunteer organizations across the nation.

  • Organizations like New York Cares, HandsOn Atlanta and Greater D.C. Cares partner with community-based agencies and public schools to increase their impact. These action centers help individuals, families and corporate and community groups unite in service to others.

  • In addition to ongoing programs, the action centers hold large events and serve-a-thons, bringing together thousands of volunteers in national days of service —from beautifying local parks to painting and renovating schools to preparing meals for the homeless.

  • Around the country other civic activists found organizations like New York Cares. In cities like Washington D.C. and Atlanta, Georgia these organizations offer potential volunteers scheduling flexibility, a diversity of service opportunities and quality projects managed by experienced volunteers.
