In 1992, HandsOn Atlanta and other leading volunteer centers including New York Cares and Greater D.C. Cares found CityCares, a network that strengthens and unifies volunteer centers around the world.

CityCares develops education tools to train and inspire concerned volunteers to take ownership and create new ways to tackle the social problems of their communities.

CityCares utilizes the emerging power of the Web as a tool to engage volunteers in service. The organization's early use of the Web connects willing volunteers with resources and volunteer opportunities in their community.

CityCares creates a sustainable model of volunteering and provides a national network for sharing resources. With an established and effective model for citizen service and civic engagement, CityCares works to promote and guide grassroots groups who engage willing citizens in addressing local needs.

CityCares develops the capacity of grassroots groups by offering management and accountability tools, start-up help, innovative programmatic models for replication, and thought leadership.
