Meet Daily Point of Light Award honoree Ericka Woods. Read her story, and nominate an outstanding volunteer or family as a Daily Point of Light.
For more than a decade, Ericka Woods has shown up for Detroit through meals served, socks collected, and conversations that remind people they matter. As the founder of 1Mother2Another, she has built a network of thousands of women and dedicates 30 to 40 hours each month to organizing service projects, coordinating volunteers, and connecting families with the resources they need most.
Her work meets people where they are. She oversees the Kind Cabinet, a free, 24-hour community food pantry she restocks weekly to reach families facing transportation barriers. She leads monthly initiatives supporting shelters, schools, children, and individuals experiencing homelessness. And through Sip Sunday, she gathers mothers each week for a space to connect, decompress, and talk openly about real-life challenges, including mental health.
“Meaningful support begins with respecting people’s choices.”
Ericka Woods
Ericka’s approach is rooted in dignity. Having grown up in a family that sometimes relied on community assistance, she understands what it means to need support, and she offers it without judgment. What keeps her going is seeing the relief and happiness on someone’s face… a beautiful reminder of why the work matters.
