New York City Relief

Daily Point of Light # 759 Apr 30, 1992

New York City Relief was recognized as Daily Point of Light honoree #759 on April 30, 1992. The post below reflects the original recognition. Now known as City Relief, the organization continues to serve New York and New Jersey.

In 1989, after 23 years of success in private business, Richard and Dixie Galloway turned their attention to the plight of homeless people.

After extensive research, the Galloways discovered that numerous support services were already available. They decided to focus their work on matching homeless individuals with services that best meet their needs. They converted an old school bus into a medical clinic, kitchen and resource office which travels to different neighborhoods. A corps of volunteers help the Galloways serve someone a hot meal, escort a substance user to a detoxification center, refer pregnant women to free health care services and much more. This program has been replicated in Philadelphia and Toronto.
