Volunteer Engagement Expert, Sue Carter Kahl, Ph.D., Joins Points of Light
Carter Kahl joins Points of Light to build the case for investing in volunteer engagement that drives meaningful impact and strengthens communities. Her career spans roles in the nonprofit and philanthropic sectors, where she has built deep experience in civic engagement and volunteering, translating research into accessible and practical insights. This new role reflects Points of Light’s investment in long-term capacity building across the sector. By building programs that support nonprofits and volunteer managers, we drive lasting community impact and increase the value of volunteering on a national scale.

An internationally recognized expert on volunteer engagement, Carter Kahl has facilitated sessions for the White House Conference on Faith-Based and Community Initiatives, the National Park Service, the Points of Light Conference and more. She taught a graduate course on strategic volunteer engagement at the University of San Diego, and her writing has been featured in Transforming Disruption to Impact, Volunteer Engagement 2.0, Nonprofit Quarterly, the Sacramento Bee and the San Diego Business Journal. She was named one of the top 10 Volunteer Leadership Voices in 2025 by Galaxy Digital.
Carter Kahl holds a Ph.D. in leadership from the University of San Diego, a master’s in social work administration and a certificate in nonprofit management. An active volunteer, she is an executive coach for nonprofit leaders through the Fieldstone Leadership Network, supports strategic volunteer initiatives and served two terms as a state commissioner with California Volunteers.

Points of Light Presents Bass Pro Shops Founder and Lead Outfitter Johnny Morris with Prestigious Honor, The George H.W. Bush Points of Light Award, to Culminate a Year of Recognizing Outstanding Volunteer Leaders
Points of Light honored Johnny Morris, founder & Lead Outfitter of Bass Pro Shops, with the organization’s highest honor The George H.W. Bush Points of Light Award. The special presentation was held at the company’s corporate office in Springfield, M.O. Morris was recognized for his extraordinary leadership in service, conservationism and veterans support. As the visionary behind Bass Pro Shops and the driving force of the Johnny Morris Conservation Foundation, Morris has championed habitat restoration, wildlife conservation and outdoor education programs across the country — ensuring that people of all ages can continue to enjoy and connect with the outdoors for generations to come.
Morris’ decades-long friendship with Points of Light Founder, President George H.W. Bush, was rooted in their shared appreciation and commitment to nature and conservation. Morris and the Bass Pro Shops team supported President Bush’s Vamos A Pescar Education Fund, which helps families experience the joys of fishing, boating and supporting conservation. Morris recognized all the Bass Pro Shops outfitters who support and continue their efforts, saying, “their 40,000 outfitters are individual points of light, shining brightly to do good.”

Points of Light, in partnership with the National Youth Leadership Council (NYLC), today announced a bold step forward for civic leadership. The National Service-Learning Conference® at the Points of Light Conference will bring these two important groups of civic leaders together, June 22–25, 2026, in Washington, D.C. At a time when volunteering rates are stagnant and trust in institutions is eroding, young people are not waiting to lead—they already are. Uniting these two conferences centers intergenerational leadership as a driver of systemic change, bringing youth leaders, educators, executives, policymakers, and civic innovators together as equals to co-create solutions and strengthen the civic infrastructure that sustains democracy.

The 2025 Honorees of The George H.W. Bush Points of Light Awards demonstrate this commitment to putting volunteering and community at the center of their lives. The honorees are:
Marvin Ellison is Lowe’s Chairman and Chief Executive Officer. With over 35 years of retail leadership stewarding some of the largest Fortune 500 companies, Marvin’s professional and civic leadership has earned him many accolades, including Barron’s annual list of “Top CEOs” and inclusion on Fortune’s “Most Inspirational CEOs” and “World’s Greatest Leaders” list. Marvin and his wife, Sharyn, are committed to being of service within their faith and community, primarily through the support of religious and philanthropic organizations that promote higher education, self-empowerment and excellence for minority youth.
Gregg Petersmeyer is a lifelong champion of civic engagement, a transformative leader and visionary civic architect, and Chairman of America’s Promise Alliance. His integrity and belief in the good of others have shaped the modern service movement in America. Gregg is the founding Director of the White House Office of National Service where he launched the Daily Point of Light Award–the first daily presidential honor for outstanding volunteers.
Dynasty Taylor is the founder and CEO of Dynasty’s United Youth Association (DUYA). An advocate, social worker and proud native of South Los Angeles, she founded the nonprofit DUYA at just 23 years old to empower underserved youth to rise from poverty by helping students become successful, self-sufficient and engaged members of society. Guided by a deep commitment to social justice, Dynasty pursued a Master’s in Social Work to gain the tools necessary to empower underserved youth to rise from poverty to prosperity—a mission that remains at the heart of DUYA’s work today.
Highly acclaimed journalist Judy Woodruff hosted the evening which also brought together notable leaders from the public, private and nonprofit sectors. Points of Light regional affiliates Jennifer Williamson of Volunteer Fairfax and Lisa Fikes of the Leadership Center of Arlington were in attendance. This year, distinguished honorees include Dynasty Taylor, an advocate, social entrepreneur and nonprofit founder from South Los Angeles, and Gregg Petersmeyer , a lifelong champion of civic engagement and chairman of America’s Promise Alliance. Dynasty Taylor, founder and chief executive officer of Dynasty’s United Youth Association, will be recognized with The George H.W. Ellison’s dedication to corporate social responsibility has led Lowe’s unwavering support of safe and affordable housing, skilled trades education, disaster response and community improvement programs. From her earliest days as a graduate student at USC, Taylor has been a fierce advocate for educational equity. A social worker and proud native of South Los Angeles, Taylor founded Dynasty’s United Youth Association (DUYA) to advance educational equity and empower underserved youth to rise from poverty to prosperity. Her leadership extends beyond DUYA, serving as a Public Social Services commissioner in Los Angeles County, where she advocates policies that uplift and protect marginalized communities, unlocking the potential of the next generation.
Gregg Petersmeyer has spent a lifetime illuminating the path of service for others quietly, powerfully, and with unwavering conviction. A transformative leader and visionary civic architect, his integrity and belief in the good of others have shaped the modern service movement in America. With more than 35 years of experience across the public, private, and nonprofit sectors, Petersmeyer has dedicated his career to advancing civic purpose and volunteerism as foundational to a healthy democracy. As a trusted advisor to President George H. W. Bush, he brought to life one of the most enduring hallmarks of that presidency: the idea that “Any definition of a successful life must include serving others.” As the founding Director of the White House Office of National Service, Petersmeyer launched the Daily Point of Light Award as the first-ever daily presidential honor recognizing individual volunteers making extraordinary contributions to their communities across America. He was instrumental in the creation of the Points of Light Foundation, and he played a leading role in shaping and passing the National and Community Service Act of 1990, legislation that laid the groundwork for what would become AmeriCorps. His dedication to empowering others through service extended far beyond his time in government. As a founder of America’s Promise Alliance, established by General Colin Powell following the Presidents’ Summit for America’s Future, Petersmeyer championed comprehensive efforts to improve the lives of children and youth.
His decades of board leadership, including long-standing service with Points of Light and City Year, reflect his steadfast commitment to building a more just and connected world. Points of Light Convenes National Nonprofit Leaders to Champion and Accelerate Collaboration to Grow Volunteering
In a pivotal moment for civic engagement in America, more than 80 national nonprofit leaders convened in an invitation-only, special gathering at the 2025 Points of Light Conference to lay the groundwork for a bold new coalition to transform volunteerism. Points of Light unveiled its vision to double the rate of volunteering by 2035, a goal that will require deep philanthropic investment, cross-sector collaboration, and a renewed commitment to building the civic infrastructure needed to sustain long-term growth and stability. As the national rate of volunteering remains stagnant around 28% over the past three decades, the goal is to elevate volunteering as a powerful catalyst for societal change—unlocking its full potential to benefit individuals, communities and society.

During the convening, sector leaders emphasized the importance of developing a national volunteer strategy to sustain and scale volunteering—calling for increased investment in volunteer systems, stronger nonprofit capacity, and a united cross-sector coalition to advance a shared framework.

Nonprofit Leader Catherine Tong Joins Points of Light Board of Directors, Bringing Global Expertise in Volunteer Mobilization and Sector Growth
Points of Light, the world’s largest organization dedicated to volunteering, proudly announces the appointment of Catherine Tong, executive director, HandsOn Hong Kong, to its Board of Directors. A respected nonprofit executive with over two decades of experience in strategic communications, civic engagement and volunteer infrastructure, Tong brings invaluable insight into the needs and opportunities facing nonprofits worldwide. Since joining HandsOn Hong Kong in 2016, Tong has led the organization in relentlessly advocating for and empowering the city’s less-resourced nonprofits. Under her leadership, the organization has significantly expanded its capacity to mobilize volunteers and uplift under-resourced nonprofits across the city.

Tong currently serves as chair of Points of Light’s Global Network Affiliate Assembly, representing the voices of its 120 nonprofit member organizations across 32 countries. In this role, she ensures that the voices of nonprofit leaders are heard and that strategies reflect the realities of those on the ground delivering vital services through volunteer-powered work.
With a background that bridges nonprofit leadership and corporate event strategy – having led teams at OgilvyOne and The Economist Group – Tong is known for bringing people together around causes that matter. She is also a sought-after speaker and workshop leader on service programs, volunteer engagement and nonprofit capacity-building.
“All over the world, volunteers are catalysts for positive change—but nonprofits on the front lines must be equipped and empowered to channel this spirit to serve into meaningful action,” said Catherine Tong. “I’m honored to join the Points of Light board to help advance our mission of building strong, resilient communities where volunteerism is woven into the fabric of society and everyone can thrive.”
Tong holds a Bachelor of Arts Degree from the University of Technology in Sydney. In 2024, she was awarded a competitive scholarship from the Harvard Business School Association Hong Kong to join the ‘Strategic Perspectives in Nonprofit Management’ program at Harvard Business School – further deepening her leadership and impact in the sector.
She joined the Points of Light Board effective June 3, 2025.

Points of Light and Galaxy Digital Announce Strategic Partnership to Advance Volunteer Technology and Data Insights
Points of Light, the world’s largest organization dedicated to volunteering, today announced a strategic partnership with Engage, creators of the Get Connected Volunteer Technology product suite. Through this partnership, Galaxy Digital will acquire Engage, Points of Light’s volunteer engagement platform. The agreement is expected to be finalized later this summer.
The partnership marks a milestone in Points of Light’s strategy to focus on mission-aligned innovation, simplify operations, and strengthen access to data and research that supports sector-wide insights on volunteering and nonprofits. Galaxy Digital will assume full responsibility for the Engage platform, including its operations and clients.

As part of the agreement, Points of Light will:
Gain access to volunteer data to advance its research on civic engagement
Expanded strategic collaboration with a technology provider already integrated across the affiliate network
Maintain a branded platform where individuals can continue to find volunteer opportunities and connect with organizations, through a white-label version of Engage hosted at engage.pointsoflight.org and on its primary site
