Season of Giving: Growing Businesses, Changing the World
On day
7 of 9 for Points of Light’s Season of Giving, we want to explore what it means to be a social entrepreneur
,
and how you can engage in this area of our Civic Circle. While most private sector businesses measure performance goals of revenue
, market share
and
stock prices,
social entrepreneurs focus on goals that generate a positive return for society.
One of our Daily Points of Light Award honorees, Verena Hefti, successfully established her organization, Leaders Plus, to enable parents to grow their leadership skills. You
can read more about Verena
and how her organization helps individuals advance their career skills through senior leader mentorship, career advancement support and parental support assistance.

As the dynamic field of social entrepreneurship continues to expand, you can support these innovators by:
- Being an advocate and sharing their efforts with your friends and family. Not everyone knows this type of organization and business model exists.
- Supporting social entrepreneurs and their businesses by purchasing their products and services.
- Becoming a social entrepreneur yourself and expanding the field even further. Today, social entrepreneurs exist in almost every sector from clothing and retail to system design.
At Points of Light, we know that doing good comes in many forms, and we are excited about uplifting the stories of social entrepreneurs and shining a light on their impactful work.
Check back in with us tomorrow when we share more ways that empower you to do good.

Season of Giving: Using Your Vote to Engage & Advocate
A record number of individuals turned out to vote in the latest United States
p
residential election
–
more than
150
million
Americans
.
In our recent civic engagement research,
Civic Life Today
, 78
percent
of respondents said post COVID-19, voting will be more important than ever.
S
ee
ing
so many people
cast
their vote as a means of taking action and advocating for their beliefs
shows that civic engagement is a continued priority
.
As we celebrate this
milestone in history, Points of Light wants to
thank and
uplift the
volunteers that made the election process safe
and efficient.
Democracy depends on ordinary people who ensure that elections run smoothly and that every vote is counted.
If you know someone in your life who volunteered t
his election cycle, thank them for their service and for being an essential worker for democracy.
Although the
election is over,
there are still ways you can engage and help
others
get
involved
:
- Stay informed about local issues. While presidential and midterm elections garner the most media attention, there are critical votes in local communities from school board budgets to town council members. Don’t forget to participate in these critical elections in your community.
- Equip others to get involved. Sharing nonpartisan resources and information about upcoming elections and policy issues equips voters with essential information about the voting process. Organizations like When We All Vote, Civic Alliance, and The League of Women Voters encourages informed and active participation in government and distributes free, nonpartisan educational materials for all voters.
- Volunteer. You can still become a volunteer poll worker, letter-writer or phone banker for the runoff elections that will be held over the next couple months and for local elections in the future. Check out our election resources for more information on all the ways you can get involved, inside and outside of your home.
At Points of Light, we believe that every individual should be able to live their most civically engaged life, and voting is an important piece of that.
Thank you to all the voters, volunteers and elected officials who ensure the voice of the people is
heard
during elections

What can you do to be civically engaged at work? Here are a few tips:
- Research the social responsibility programs of the companies you are applying to or working for and see how much they give back to your own community and communities across the globe.
- Find out if your employer has a volunteer program and sign up to participate. If they don’t have one, share our resources with your leadership and ask them to explore ways your company can get more civically involved. Check out Points of Light’s Community for Employee Civic Engagement for ideas.
- If you are a business owner or hold a leadership position, explore the ways your organization can give back. You can motivate your supply chain to engage in this work with you, amplifying your impact.
- We recently launched The Civic 50 survey, a benchmarking tool for companies in the United States with revenues of $1 billion or more, to measure their community engagement and social impact. Encourage your company to take the survey and see how they measure up.
At Points of Light, w
e believe that companies, their employees, partners, vendors and customers

Season of Giving: Use Your Voice for Good
For decades, people have been using their voice to advocate for change. From the civil rights marches in the 196
0s, to the peaceful protests this year, individuals have
take
n
action in their communities
and
been
using their voice to
advocate for important issues
in greater and greater numbers
.
There are so many ways for people to use their voice – and sometimes they don’t even realize they’re doing it!
It can be as simple as
telling your friends and family about a nonprofit organization
that is
close to your heart.
It can also include calling your electe
d officials about an issue, using your voice to speak out on social media, using your voice to bring kindness to the world.

For our young Daily Point
of Light Award
honoree
Paloma
Rambana
,
using her voice was out of necessity. She realized there was a funding gap for visually-
impaired
children between ages 6-13
.
She worked and advocated to

Another way to raise awareness and support is through
email and social media.
Sharing an impac
t story online can inspire people to take action in their own lives.
Many individuals are taking the step to
become
a fundraiser on behalf of
organization
s
that are important to them
, or sharing stories
of people who are doing good in their communities
.
Points of Light’s
Civic Engagement Research
showed that
each
generation
use
s
their voice differently. Generation Z
is more likely to participate in a demonstration or rally while older adults, like
baby
b
oomers,
are more likely to call elected officials.
We believe that civic engagement isn’t a one-size-fits all concept and our suggestions for harnessing the power of your voice can be tailored to fit your unique circumstances and values.

Here’s just a few ways
that you
can
impact your community through your
spending power
:
- Choosing to shop at a small, locally–owned and/or minority-owned business helps address inequality and contributes to the growth of your own community by creating jobs and boosting your local economy.
- Similarly, you can choose to buy from certified B Corporations, Public Benefit Corporations and social enterprises. Although not identical, these types of businesses believe that companies can be a force for good. They work to prioritize social impact in their operations. Some well-known examples include Ben & Jerry’s, TOMS Shoes, Seventh Generation and Patagonia.
- When you purchase through large retailers, look for companies that are socially responsible and philanthropic. Many of them, like Amazon, have initiatives that donate a portion of your purchase to charity. You can support Points of Light every time you shop on Amazon by selecting us through AmazonSmile. A percentage of the sale is donated back to Points of Light and helps fund our critical work.
As a reminder, purchase power centers on the choice of where and how you spend your money – not the dollar amount itself. As you go about your normal shopping routine, consider the areas

8 Ways to Give Back on Family Volunteer Day
This year marks the 30
th
anniversary
Points of Light
will celebrate
families giving
back to their community t
ogether as part of
Family Volunteer Day.
While we’re excited to celebrate family volunteering on Nov
.
21, we recognize that many
families may need to adjust how they
’re giving back this year
.
Varying school and work schedules and more time at home means that many families are together more, but
need
different types of activities to do together.
Here are a few
ideas
for
spending time together as a family while doing good for others.
Here are
eight
projects for kids of all ages:
- Food banks and pantries serve a great service to those in need of food in our communities. In addition, food banks and pantries are seeing an increase in visitors and may not have enough in food donations to meet those needs. By completing virtual fundraisers, you can help them help others. Feeding America can help you find a local food bank or pantry you can support!
- The impact of COVID-19 continues to change our daily lives and routines, but the in-person volunteers that nonprofits rely on are more important than ever. Make masks to protect yourself, your family or others in your community who want to volunteer in person. The following face covering project can be modified to do at home and delivered via mail or drop off to adhere to the social distancing guidelines set by local and national authorities.
- We could all use a visual reminder to be kind! Help spread kindness by putting your thoughtful and good intentions on paper and display them in your window for others to see! This arts and crafts project can inspire and encourage others to ignite a chain of kindness too! All you need are a few of the following: construction paper; markers or crayons; stickers; paint; glitter; glue and tape.
- Some senior citizens can feel isolated a lonely. A simple visit, even a virtual visit, can make all the difference in their day. Help bring cheer to a senior center near you by sending notes or doing virtual activities! This project can help brighten the day of a senior who is feeling distant from loved ones and family members.
- There are a lot people going through hard and frustrating times. You can help them channel and release their frustration by making Relax Bottles: water bottles decorated and filled with glitter. Watching the glitter settle after shaking the bottle can be relaxing. Use this Relax Bottle project guide to help others feel more at ease during these times of uncertainty.
- Another great way to get young kids involved is creating boxes of love. Create and send Boxes of Love to send to military or first responders as a thank you and reminder of home. This DIY video is a great way to encourage younger kids to get engaged!
- Helping seniors fight memory loss by doing puzzles with them, and by donating puzzles to organizations is a great way to serve seniors. You can even make your own puzzles! Watch this DIY video to learn more!
- As the country is still facing natural disasters, another great way to help volunteer is by making and delivering fleece blankets to those in need: evacuees, families in homeless shelters or kids in foster care. Spread the love, and some warmth, with this DIY, no-sew blanket project.
There are many
other
ways to give back this year and do something that can bring your family together in a meaningful way
. With many people in need of kindness more than ever, your family can be the light that offers hope for a better tomorrow.
