The Veteran Leader Corps (VLC) is one of three national service programs at Points of Light. Our new AmeriCorps*National Direct program focuses on developing volunteer leadership, meaningful service opportunities and cultivating job readiness with robust training and resources for veterans and military families.
The VLC supports the Community Blueprint a roadmap for local communities across America to address the most common challenges facing veterans, returning service members and their families by transforming goodwill into service. It identifies eight critical needs facing veterans and their families (employment, K-12 and higher education, behavioral health, housing, financial/legal issues, family strength, reintegration and volunteerism) and brings together community solutions for addressing these issues.
AmeriCorps members and community volunteers are the key to scaling what continues to surface around the country as a solution that is working to address reintegration challenges faced by our veterans: providing community members with meaningful ways to connect with and serve veterans, and engaging veterans to serve other veterans and their communities.
Veteran Leader Corps members serve with volunteer centers and workforce development nonprofits around the country. Members serve a full-time term of 11 months and receive these benefits:
- A modest living allowance
- Health coverage
- Child care subsidy (if eligible)
- $5,550 Segal AmeriCorps Education Award upon successful completion of term
- Leadership training from Points of Light, the world’s leading volunteer organization
- Opportunity to build professional skills in others and yourself
- Opportunity to lead as change agents in communities
