JUDGING CRITERIA

Daily Point of Light Awards are given to individuals who find innovative ways to meet community needs; efforts which often lead to long-term solutions and impact social problems in their local communities.

THE AWARD'S HISTORY

On Jan. 8, 1993, President George H. W. Bush submitted a report to the nation on his efforts to engage Americans in service. He called these volunteers “points of light.”

Since 2002, Nanci Boutet has hosted a Special Surfers Night each month for 50 special needs children, teaching them how to surf. Nanci and 100 volunteers help a group of autistic kids and their parents learn a new sport and build their confidence. Proceeds from the session benefit Seacoast Autism Awareness and the Maine Autism Society.
