Juliette Gordon Low

Juliette Gordon Low founded Girl Scouts of the United States of America in 1912 for girls to develop and strengthen leadership skills; to provide support, kindness and compassion to those in need; and to prepare to serve as responsible citizens. Her efforts have enabled millions of girls, from 5 to 17, to enjoy fun, friendship and learning opportunities in a nurturing Girl Scout environment. Social issues that need to be addressed today:
•   Equal Opportunities for Girls and Women - Women make 75.3 cents on the dollar compared to men. In most circumstances, women are paid less than men when all of these factors are comparable.*
•   Health - More than 1.75 billion of the world’s population is between the ages of 10 and 24 years. Many adolescents (aged 10 to 19 years) face challenges that hinder their health and development, including poverty, a lack of access to health information and services, and unsafe environments.**
•   Education - Around third grade, girls begin to lose interest in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM). The problem gets worse -- the percentage of girls who say they would not study math anymore given the choice increases in fourth, eighth and 12th grade from 9 percent to 15 percent to 50 percent.***
•   Environment – 1,300 species of plants and animals are endangered in    America, pesticides are a factor in endangering plants and animals.****

Location

Extra Mile Pathway Map

The Extra Mile begins at the corner of Pennsylvania Avenue and 15th Street, NW and continues north on 15th Street to G Street, NW. There, at the Old Ebbitt Grill, it turns east on G Street for two blocks to its intersection with 13th Street. As honoree medallions are added in future years, the Pathway will be continued on G Street.

The closest Metro stations are Metro Center on the red line and McPherson Square on the blue and orange lines.
