Barbara and Neil Bush to Present Daily Point of Light Award to Books Between Kids

Award to be Presented During ‘One America’ Volunteer Tour stop in Houston
Program Includes Panel of Community Leaders Tackling How to Keep Kids Motivated and Eager to Learn

HOUSTON, Nov. 7, 2013 – Points of Light, the world’s largest organization dedicated to volunteer service, and JPMorgan Chase will bring the national volunteer service campaign One America to Houston on November 12. The tour stop will feature some of the city’s leading activists for literacy, including former first lady Barbara Bush and Neil Bush, chairman of Points of Light.

Mrs. Bush and Neil will present the Daily Point of Light award to Houston’s Books Between Kids, a Houston-based nonprofit started by two mothers who provide books to disadvantaged students. Last year, the fledgling organization collected and distributed more than 100,000 books to more than 15,000 kids enrolled at 22 Houston schools.

Prior to the award presentation, a panel of community leaders will discuss how Houston can work together to equip the city’s youth with the resources and support they need to succeed in school and life. Randall Pinkston, former White House correspondent for CBS News, will moderate the discussion. Other panelists will include Rice University Professor Stephen Klineberg, Aldine ISD Superintendent Wanda Bamberg and prominent business leader Larry Kellner.

To fund future literacy efforts, Chase will present a $10,000 grant to Barbara Bush Houston Literacy Foundation.

The One America campaign aims to bring powerful voices together to engage one million people in volunteer service in support of community action, with a focus on education, hunger and the environment. Houston is one of nine cities on the tour, which kicked off on July 30, 2013 and includes New York, Chicago, Miami, and  Los Angeles.

The Houston program will be held at the Hilton Americas- Houston, starting at noon Tuesday, November 12. Following the program, a service project will begin at 2 p.m. at the Books Between Kids warehouse: 9947 Harwin Drive, Suite C, Houston, TX 77036. Volunteers will sort and box new- and gently used books for 90 minutes.

To be a part of the One America campaign or suggest powerful voices that can inspire others to unite in volunteer service, follow the conversation on Facebook or on Twitter using #1America.
