Boston - BostonCares

Event: Service Project - ServiceWorks joins several Boston orgs in making reading success kits

Special Guests: Emcee Vanessa Welch of FOX25 News and Mayor of Boston Martin J. Walsh.

For MLK Day 2016, Boston Cares has created opportunities for 650 volunteers to support literacy programming in classrooms. MLK Day volunteers will create Reading Success Kits for the Lee Academy, Winship Elementary, and Edward Everett Elementary Schools within Boston Public Schools. Each Reading Success Kit will include a small bookshelf, grade-specific books, literacy games, hand-made picture books to serve as "story starters" and classroom sets of literacy flashcards and reading journals.

By the end of the day, we hope to create the following:

  • Build, sand, and paint 50 bookshelves
  • Create 100 literacy games
  • Create 1,250 reading journals
  • Craft 120 "story starter" picture books to facilitate story-telling
  • Assemble 1,200 grade-specific literacy flashcards
  • Create 180 lapdesks for students to take home and serve as a portable learning space

Event: Service Project - Activity kits for autistic children and adults.

Harper students will be doing a service project for Little City, an organization that provides support to children and adults with autism and other developmental/intellectual disabilities in the Chicago area. Little City’s Child Bridge Center for Group-Home Living is an important community (with 14 group homes) fostering independence, growth and learning and is home to over 50 children.

The activity kits for Little City are necessary for children to help them develop fine motor and sensory skills, among other benefits. Activity kits will include games, puzzles, colorful and textured toys, art supplies, etc.

Event: Marching in MLK Community Parade

Please join Education is Freedom and ServiceWorks to celebrate the life of Martin Luther King Jr at the Dallas’ annual MLK Community Parade. We’d be excited to share this wonderful volunteer experience with local volunteers.The MLK parade route will cover 2.9 miles (90 minute walk) beginning at Dallas City Hall  and ending at Fair Park


Event: Service Project - Neighborhood Beautification

Date: Monday, January 18th, 2016

Location: Madison High School, 3000 MLK Blvd., Dallas, TX 75215

This is a neighborhood beautification in the Southern sector of Dallas, in the neighborhoods where our ServiceWorks scholars reside. We will empower youth by igniting a strong spirit of community involvement and ownership while effecting positive change. This effort is designed to demonstrate strong community support for a school that has experienced many challenge and will include:

Cleaning - Students and volunteers will remove debris from sidewalks, scrub down outdoor benches and stairways, and clean school door ways.

Gardening - Volunteers will pull weeds, plants flowers, and mulch areas in front of the school.

Inspiration - Volunteers will place tree huggers on trees around the school. (Tree huggers will post an encouraging message). Volunteers will also place cups in the fences around the school to display an encouraging message such as Hope, Dream, Unity, and Courage.

The day will start off at Sherbondy Park for an MLK Unity Walk to honor Dr. King. It will continue to Dr. Robert B. Ingram Park where we will complete the Memorial Rock Garden and the Commissioners of the City of Opa-Locka and Miami Dade County recognize and dedicate the garden to the families of Freddie London, Centrell Crocker, Torrance Stevenson and Corey Warren. The event is to promote peace, non-violence and highlight the importance of reducing gun violence in the Opa-Locka community.

Event: Literacy Fair

Partner Organizations:  Public Allies Miami, Catalyst Miami, The Children’s Trust, Early Learning Coalition

GMSC and Public Allies will host games centered around literacy.Among the “Fun Stations” will be a Writing Wall with prompts such as “Tell about a time you stood up for what's right,” and a podium where young people can read aloud from the I Have a Dream Speech.

There will also be displays on MLK & the Civil Rights Movement as well as information on why literacy is tied to MLK and social justice.

Any young person that participates will get a book from the ELC.

Let’s Share Our Story: An Intergenerational Celebration - Senior Services volunteers will engage in storytelling, assist with recording the story, as well as assisting in coordinating arts and crafts activities.

Care pack School Drive – Scholars collect unused makeup, moisturizers, soaps, conditioners, shampoos, deodorants, combs, brushes, and other self-care products to send to domestic violence shelter. In addition to coordinating a school drive, VISTA can look into a community drive or church drive, in addition to seeking out business donations. Along this line, VISTA will train 5-10 Scholars in job skills involving networking, marketing, and development before the event. Utilizing these skills, Scholars will help acquire in-kind and/or financial contributions and market the event.

Skill-Building Activities: Development and Networking workshop during pre-event planning stages; Panel discussion during lunch; Additional STEAM, nutrition and hygiene, or other workshop (Scholar choice)

The Door

The day will be dedicated to service learning based on the ServiceWorks curriculum and other civic engagement/career development activities.  From 2-3pm, there will be a Lunch with Leaders portion where Scholars will be assigned to a volunteer who will facilitate a discussion on civic engagement and career development. From 3-5pm there will be a mini service project - making hygiene packets to be donated to the homeless youth program at The Door.

San Francisco - Public Allies San Francisco

St. Louis - United Way of Greater St. Louis

Event: Service Project - Beautification Project

Charged with approaching Martin Luther King day as “a day on, not a day off” local youth and Baden community members will come together to learn and serve in honor of Martin Luther King. Jr.

ServiceWorks, a United Way sponsored program, in collaboration with Baden STEM Enrichment Center will host an event that includes an interactive lesson on leadership, community, and diversity, lunch, and a service project that will allow the community to take action by working together to beautify the Baden STEM Enrichment Center.

Washington, DC - Community Preservation DC

ServiceWorks DC will be among the very first in the nation to host a ServiceWorks Bootcamp.

This streamlined, highly-focused one day version of our curriculum will empower low-to-moderate income 16-24 year-olds with training and mentorship in leadership development, project management and communication skills.

At the conclusion of the bootcamp, participants will put their newly-learned skills to use with a service project honoring the legacy of Dr. King, assembling and distributing care kits to DC-area homeless.
