McLean, Va. – With two weeks to go before the election, millions of Americans can agree on one issue: They will take action to improve the nation on Make A Difference Day, Saturday October 27. Sponsored by Gannett’s USA WEEKEND Magazine in partnership with Points of Light, the nation’s largest mobilizer of volunteers, the annual Make A Difference Day inspires millions of Americans to volunteer in service to their neighbors and communities. Thousands of projects are planned involving corporations, communities, non-profit organizations, states and individual Americans. Gannett is leading volunteer projects all across the country. Those projects are funded by $500,000 in grants from The Gannett Foundation. HandsOn Network Action Centers nationwide are also leading projects.

Points of Light, the world’s largest volunteer service organization, the Corporation for National and Community Service (home to AmeriCorps) and a coalition of more than 55 veteran and military service organizations, nonprofits and government agencies from across the country today launched the Community Blueprint – a national initiative to support the reintegration of returning military service members, veterans and their families.

A Billion + Change, a national campaign to mobilize billions of dollars in skills-based volunteer and pro bono services from corporate America by 2013, will recognize several companies for their pro bono leadership at an event titled “Envisioning the Future of Corporate Service: A Discussion on Corporate Pro Bono and Skills-Based Volunteerism.” The event will take place Monday, Oct. 1, 2012 at the California Endowment, and will honor visionary companies including Bank of America, Deloitte, Experian, Mattel and PIMCO.

Hurricane Isaac slammed into the Louisiana coast on Aug. 28, bringing high winds and severe flooding, leaving more than 800,000 without power. As residents along the Gulf coast assess the damage, Volunteer Louisiana, Mississippi Service Commission, Points of Light and its HandsOn Network affiliates have activated to assess volunteer needs and opportunities to support recovery in the area.
“As Isaac continues to move inland, HandsOn Network affiliates and our partner organizations are working to determine how we can best assist with local recovery efforts,” said Kellie Bentz, Points of Light director of disaster services. “Volunteers will play an important role in the coming weeks.”

More than 3,500 individuals – including first responders, veterans and the business community – will join together in Mobile, Ala., on the 9/11 Day of Service and Remembrance to support those who protect us in times of emergency and learn the best ways to help the community prepare for a disaster. Points of Light is supporting this effort, and thousands of others across the country, to honor those lost and those who rose in service after the 2001 attacks.

These young leaders embody generationOn’s vision of developing young people into creative problem-solvers, allowing them to experience their power and potential to become global leaders through service in their communities.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The National Conference on Citizenship (NCoC) and Points of Light, the nation’s definitive experts on civic engagement, announced the start of a two-week countdown to the closing of The Civic 100, a national initiative to survey, rank and recognize corporations making a difference in communities. S&P 500 companies have until July 31 to complete The Civic 100 survey.

Building on the turning point created in Chicago, it was announced today that the 2013 Conference will be held in Washington, D.C.

Washington, D.C. — A Billion + Change, a rapidly growing national campaign to mobilize billions of dollars of pro bono and skills-based volunteer (SBV) services from corporate America, announced today that 200 companies have pledged an estimated $1.8 billion worth of skills-based services to help build nonprofit capacity. This keeps A Billion + Change on track to inspire 500 companies to create or expand a skills-based volunteer program in their workplace by 2013.
