Reaching the Youth of San Antonio, inc.

Daily Point of Light # 836 Jul 20, 1992

Founded in 1986 by Melody and Louis Jones, Reaching the Youth of San Antonio (RTYOSA) offers a variety of programs targeted at youth from low-income neighborhoods.

A corps of volunteers befriend the young people by participating in a variety of programs. Seven volunteers teach and mentor 54 youth in the Instrumental Network Serving to Enhance Development (INSTEAD) program. Children, ages seven to seventeen, meet five times a week to receive tutoring in math, phonics, reading, and science. The Juveniles Assembled to Initiate Positive Leaders program brings together volunteers and at-risk high school students for weekly discussions aimed at building a sense of responsibility. RTYOSA also has a shelter for pregnant teens who are homeless or runaways.
