Volunteering Changes Everything

Reimagining Service 2035 is a bold effort to reinvigorate volunteering in America. Aiming to bring the benefits of volunteering—stronger connections, increased empathy and trust, and bridge building—to individuals, communities and societies, we’ll double the number of people who volunteer by the year 2035.

This initiative is about more than just numbers. It’s about creating a clear plan to make volunteering easier, more meaningful, and more accessible for everyone. That means:

  • Supporting nonprofits who rely on volunteers
  • Building systems that make it simple to get involved
  • Strengthening connections in our communities and with one another

A National Volunteer Strategy

Phase One of Reimaging Service 2035 is a National Volunteer Strategy to create meaningful impact in a thriving ecosystem. Our new Progress Report shows what we have done, where we are to date and shares a first iteration of the National Volunteer Strategy.

Informed by surveying more than 2,200 nonprofits and volunteers, conducting hundreds of interviews and having multiple sessions with our Advisory Council, highlights of the report include:

  • Tension in volunteer dynamics between flexibility and meaning, participation and capacity, and individual motivation and system design.
  • Addressing these tensions requires rethinking how volunteering is supported, experienced, and valued across the ecosystem.
  • The 12 strategic priorities across three areas – a thriving ecosystem; meaningful engagement; and transformative impact – that need to be addressed for change.
