Reliable Transportation Opens the Door to Better Health

Meet Daily Point of Light Award honoree Shayan Siddiqui. Read his story, and nominate an outstanding volunteer or family as a Daily Point of Light.
Shayan Siddiqui is cofounder and president of MiCaringHeart, a youth-led nonprofit working to improve the lives of children with sickle cell disease. After seeing firsthand through his physician parents—particularly his mother, a sickle cell specialist—that patients at Children’s Hospital of Michigan were missing essential medical appointments because they lacked reliable transportation, Shayan knew something as simple as getting to the hospital could have life-altering consequences. Since helping launch MiCaringHeart in 2021, he has led fundraising campaigns, secured grants, raised awareness through social media and partnered closely with the hospital’s sickle cell social worker to support a transportation program that helps patients and families reach critical appointments. By removing one of the biggest barriers to care, Shayan and MiCaringHeart are helping children receive the treatment they need while easing the burden on families already navigating a complex medical condition. His work demonstrates how identifying a practical community need can lead to meaningful, lasting impact.
The issues that exist today will not simply disappear tomorrow. No progress has ever been made by those who do not actively seek to create it. We must work today to give ourselves and future generations a better tomorrow.
For Shayan, volunteering has never been about acting alone. He credits his parents, hospital staff and the many supporters who have contributed to MiCaringHeart’s mission with making its success possible. That spirit of collaboration shapes the advice he shares with other young people: seek help, learn from those already doing the work and don’t be afraid to ask others to join your efforts. He also believes young people have a responsibility to help solve today’s challenges because they will inherit the consequences of the decisions made now. Looking ahead, Shayan hopes to continue growing MiCaringHeart so it can serve even more people living with sickle cell disease while inspiring other young leaders to take action on the causes that matter most to them. By combining compassion with practical solutions, he is helping build a healthier future for patients and demonstrating that meaningful change begins when someone decides to act.
