What inspired you to give back?
I have always had a heart of service, [even] as a child, serving both in the community and my church. In 2005, I joined AmeriCorps and served two terms. Seeing young people ignored around issues that impact them ignited something in me. [I wanted] to find a way to involve them in the decision making – and not just as a service recipient.
What is the most important lesson you’ve learned through your experience as a volunteer?
The most important lesson is that serving others ultimately serves us all. You can’t enter into a service opportunity thinking you have the answers – the answers come from the people. Specifically, I have learned that when you give students an opportunity to think outside of the box they have known their entire lives, they realize there is a whole world waiting for them to influence. It’s amazing to see the change in them.
Why do you think it’s important for other people to volunteer?
It allows you a different perspective on your own life! Volunteering requires you to step outside of yourself for a moment, to focus on a larger challenge that can be solved when we all give of ourselves a bit more.
