Adopted as an infant, Brown understands the lasting impact a loving family can have on a child’s life. Fueled by the belief that every child deserves a permanent home and nurturing environment, she founded the
, an organization committed to transforming the child welfare system and ensuring more foster children find their forever families.
Brown’s journey is a testament to the power of turning personal experiences into catalysts for change. Her adoption story ignited a passion within her to advocate for children in foster care, recognizing the systemic challenges they face in finding stability and belonging. This understanding drives her relentless pursuit of creating a more effective and compassionate child welfare system.
“I’ve always had a deep love and respect for my parents because they truly did give me a second chance at life,” Brown reflected. “I am so grateful for them adopting me, and their act of selfless love not only transformed my life, but has transformed thousands of lives.”
Selfless Love Foundation tackles the complex issues surrounding the child welfare system, working in three impactful areas, adoptions, independent living, and advocacy. The Foundation creates opportunities for children in foster care to find forever families and supports prospective parents along their adoption journey. For youth who age out of the system, Selfless Love provides housing, resources, and the support they need to become self-sufficient adults. The organization’s advocacy work aims to create system-wide improvements that benefit children currently in care and youth who have aged out of foster care. Selfless Love believes the people closest to the issue also hold workable solutions. That’s why youth who have experienced foster care are part of the organization’s advocacy team. Youth are integral in setting policy priorities and meeting with legislators to create change.
Brown’s leadership and advocacy have spurred significant progress in the process and system. The Selfless Love Foundation has successfully facilitated numerous adoptions, providing children with the stability and love they deserve. It has also played a crucial role in raising awareness about the needs of foster children and advocating for policy changes that prioritize their well-being.
“After advocating for two years, Florida now has a law that protects children’s photos and information who are available for adoption. Thanks to our advocacy team, now only families are able to access these photos on secure websites,” Brown said. “We plan to advocate for this to get passed federally.”
Brown’s vision extends beyond simply finding forever families for children in foster care; she strives to create a society where every child feels valued and supported. A belief that every child deserves to be loved unconditionally and to have a safe and stable home fuels her tireless efforts to build a more compassionate and effective system that meets the needs of all children.

Patrick Dempsey: Championing Compassion in Cancer Care
Patrick Dempsey, renowned actor and founder of the
, has devoted himself to supporting people living with cancer. Inspired by his mother’s courageous battle with ovarian cancer, Dempsey witnessed firsthand the devastating impact the disease has on patients and their families. “My personal impact was my mother was diagnosed in the late 90s with ovarian cancer,” Dempsey shares. “She had over 12 recurrences during a 14-year period.”
Dempsey’s experience illuminated the critical need for comprehensive care that extends beyond medical treatment. Recognizing the importance of addressing the holistic needs of patients and their families, Dempsey established the Dempsey Center in his home state of Maine to provide free support services. The center’s commitment to offering services at no cost stems from Dempsey’s understanding of the financial burden cancer can place on families. He emphasizes, “With the cancer diagnosis, with the insurance, with the payments, all that stuff that can get wiped out very quickly and it produces a lot of anxiety.”
The center fosters a welcoming and supportive environment, ensuring that patients feel embraced and understood from the moment they walk through the door. “They’re not numbers. They’re human beings,” Dempsey states. The involvement of volunteers who have personally experienced cancer further contributes to the compassionate atmosphere, fostering an immediate connection and understanding between those who have faced similar challenges.
Over the past 17 years, the Dempsey Center has evolved and expanded its services, driven by the growing awareness of its impact and the feedback received from clients. Virtual programs, such as
, have enabled the center to reach individuals in 32 states, ensuring that those in rural communities or facing mobility challenges can access support. Dempsey reflects on the center’s evolution, noting, “We’re servicing more people, and it just shows me and the staff and the team what a great need this is. This should be mandatory treatment.”
Looking to the future, Dempsey envisions a world where supportive care is integrated into standard cancer treatment and covered by insurance. He acknowledges the potential for technology to enhance the center’s services, envisioning a database that connects patients with relevant clinical trials and programs. Dempsey is also passionate about advocating for policy changes that address systemic issues related to cancer prevention and treatment, including education and access to healthy food.

Arthur M. Blank: A Legacy of Community Involvement
embodies the belief that businesses should strive to make a positive impact alongside financial success. “Living life with purpose, whatever form that may be, is critical for all of us,” he said.
Getting involved in the community has been a pillar of Blank’s journey since his youth. His philanthropy was shaped by various influences, starting with his mother’s dedication to community service. Even with limited financial resources, she instilled in him the importance of touching lives and making a positive impact. “A lot of the notion of giving back and making a difference in other people’s lives probably came from my exposure to her,” Blank reflects.
He also credits role models and individuals who made a difference in the world as inspirations for his philanthropic endeavors. President George H.W. Bush’s “thousand points of light” concept resonates with Blank’s vision, as he believes that individual acts of kindness can collectively illuminate communities and create positive change.
The Blank Family Foundation focuses on several key areas: youth development, democracy, mental health and well-being, the environment, and Atlanta’s historic Westside. Blank recognizes the importance of long-term commitment to address societal issues, stating, “Most of these issues are not ones where you go in and fix it in ten minutes… It’ll take long-term commitments, often over several generations, to get resolved and to make significant progress.”
One of the foundation’s priorities is listening and responding to grantee partners and the communities they serve. Blank emphasizes the importance of capacity building, ensuring that grantees have the necessary tools and resources to multiply their impact. He values collaboration and active listening, seeking to understand the needs of the communities served by these organizations.
When asked about his proudest moments, Blank’s response is heartwarming: “What I’m most proud of is that my children, all six of them, all adults now, will want to spend time with their father.” This reflects his belief in the importance of family and the legacy he is building not only through philanthropy, but also through personal relationships.
Shrusti Amula: Turning Food Waste into a Feast of Hope
Shrusti Amula, a dynamic freshman at Georgetown University, embodies the spirit of a “solutionist.” At just 13 years old, she founded the
, driven by her passion for tackling food waste and insecurity. What began simply as a school project for a STEM competition transformed into a full-fledged organization that has diverted over 200,000 pounds of food waste from landfills and donated more than 300,000 meals to people facing hunger.
Amula shows the remarkable potential of young people to create lasting change. “One of the most important things I’ve learned is that no matter how young you are, you can always make a big change in your community as long as you’re willing to put in the work,” she shares, reflecting on her experiences. Her inspiration stemmed from a fervent desire to protect the environment. She recognized that food waste was a significant contributor to climate change and saw an opportunity to address both environmental and social issues simultaneously.
Through Rise N Shine, Amula has implemented composting programs in thirteen schools, educating students about the importance of reducing food waste and its positive impact on the environment. She also collaborates with the
to recover uneaten food from schools and donate it to individuals experiencing homelessness.
Amula’s commitment to finding solutions extends beyond community programs. She actively engaged in lobbying efforts for Senate Bill 124, a grant program for composting in Maryland schools. Through postcard campaigns, virtual testimonies and in-person meetings with legislators, Amula tirelessly advocated for the bill’s passage. Though funding for the bill remains a challenge, she remains dedicated to securing the necessary resources to support composting initiatives in schools. “I’ve learned that persistence is key and to not be discouraged by setbacks,” she said.
As Shrusti Amula continues to champion the fight against food waste and insecurity, her journey proves that even the youngest among us can spark change and build a better future for all. She states, “I’ve learned the value of being a solutionist – someone willing to work hard to ensure change – instead of just an activist.”

Bush and the 2023 honorees Mike and Jacquelyne Love, Condoleezza Rice, Robert F. Smith and Rebecca and Christyn Taylor, as individuals who are driving significant and sustained impact through their everyday actions and words. These honorees and their work are lighting the path for other points of light.

“As I think about this award, I think about, ‘What is a Point of Light?’ I grew up in Denver, Colorado, in what is described as the ‘other America.’ It’s an America where I felt loved every day,” said Smith. “I lived in a beloved community, where people cared about me and the children in our community. And, yes, I have to say my mother was a great inspiration… When I think about the points of light, she being one, there were thousands of points of light in that beloved community.”
founded Rebecca’s Wish, a 501(c)3 nonprofit called designed to support children with pediatric pancreatitis, after being diagnosed with chronic pancreatitis at age 7. Her mother, Christyn, serves as president of the nonprofit, which has raised over $3,000,000 to date, and has started programs to support countless children around the United States.
“Our meaning and purpose through Rebecca’s disease became Rebecca’s Wish. It became the children we were helping. They became our meaning and purpose. They became the light that we were going toward, and their focus and their healing became our point of light,” said Christyn. “

What cause is closest to your heart?
I am most rooted in the international struggle with homelessness and am trying to help keep one person warm at a time.
I want to transform the way that our country deals with housing initiatives so that we can truly help people get back up on their feet.
How does being connected to something bigger than yourself help you see light in the world?
Being connected to something bigger than myself helps me see light in the world because I am able to see what the impact of just one 17-year-old can do, and it makes me hopeful for what we all can do if we choose to put the work in.
What is the transformation you’d like to see in the world?
In the world, I want everyone to be more compassionate and considerate because many people are struggling in ways that others can’t even imagine.

What cause is closest to your heart?
The cause that’s closest to my heart is creating bow ties for shelter pets. I believe that every pet deserves love and attention, and a stylish bow tie can help them stand out and find their forever homes. It’s incredibly rewarding to see dogs and cats looking their best and finding loving families. It’s a cause that’s become a significant part of my life, and I’m dedicated to making a positive impact on the lives of shelter pets through my work.
I want to transform my passion for creating bow ties for shelter pets into an even more significant movement. My current work involves expanding my reach and partnering with more shelters and rescue organizations to help more animals find homes. I also aim to inspire others to get involved in similar initiatives to make a collective impact helping shelter pets find homes and saving them from euthanasia.
How does being connected to something bigger than yourself help you see light in the world?
Being connected to a cause bigger than myself, like my mission to help shelter pets, brings me a lot of joy and fills my life with purpose. I’m so extremely grateful that I can use my skills and talents to support a cause I deeply care about. It reminds me of the goodness and light in the world by serving as a reminder that even the smallest of efforts can contribute to a better future.
What is the transformation you’d like to see in the world?
The transformation I want to see in the world is a more caring and open-minded culture where compassion, understanding, empathy, kindness and equality are essential principles that apply to all living things, including shelter animals. I feel that the world would be a better place if the welfare and well-being of humans and animals were given equal weight.

What cause is closest to your heart?
When I first started my advocacy, I focused a majority of my efforts towards bringing awareness to the issue of child abuse. As I grew older, that passion for wanting to protect all kids morphed into a passion to empower other young people to use their voices. For too long, we as a country have worked to silence our young people. Whether we have discounted their voice or excluded them from rooms where change is made, young people have always had to fight to make our voices heard. I would say that is what my work is today, showing others that we as young people are prepared to do what is necessary to bring progress and change our world.
I want to transform our perception of what our young people are capable of. I think starting at society’s views on young people, and proving that we are capable of anything we set our minds to, proving that there is power in our voice, proving that we deserve to be a part of making decisions that will impact us… I believe this is how we will achieve a world where young people feel heard.
How does being connected to something bigger than yourself help you see light in the world?
In this work, it is very easy to get saddened, burned out or simply feel like you should give up. However, I am honored to work with some amazing people that remind me I am not alone in this fight. Youth activism is a movement of young people, all dedicated to the same thing. We are united. We are together. We are connected because of who we are. This is enough to inspire me to keep doing my work. The love and care that is shared within this movement is enough to keep me going, and our hope, our willingness to see beyond the state we are in – that is what I remind myself every day.
What is the transformation you’d like to see in the world?
A long time ago, I would’ve said my perfect world is one without sexism, racism, homophobia, child abuse, school shootings and so much more. While that remains true, I think a larger part of that is hoping for a world where young people understand that we have the strength to move through anything. I want to see a transformation in our young people, one that gives us power, understanding, wisdom and fire for change. I think anything is possible when we bring together some amazing young people who dare to question the status quo, and that is what I want to see.

What cause is closest to your heart?
The cause closest to our hearts is friendship. Acknowledging and recognizing common humanity and the power of love in appreciating differences is fundamental to our organization. We want to transform how we communicate with each other. We want to make voices more accessible to others and make new opportunities for conversation possible for our community.
How does being connected to something bigger than yourself help you see light in the world?
Being connected to something bigger than ourselves helps us see the light in the world because we realize that there is hope and there are stories that are beautiful that are yet to be heard. The pursuit of these stories and listening to them to have a more enriched world is what we aim for.
What is the transformation you’d like to see in the world?
We want to see more humanization instead of demonization. We want more listening instead of assuming. We want more love than hatred.
Iwona Miller encourages others to slow down and appreciate the beauty in hospice care.
What cause is closest to your heart?
The most important goal for me is to show the joy of helping. Encouraging as many people as possible to have a beautiful attitude that values our lives and the inner need to be needed by other people. I would like to contribute to changing the perception of hospices only as places of dying. Beautiful things also happen in our hospice, there is life, conversations, smiles, small and great joys, performances by actors and concerts that make patients’ time more pleasant.
How does being connected to something bigger than yourself help you see light in the world?
My goal is to instill in people the desire to help others, to give them a chance to try, because I know that most often their awareness and willingness to help those in need increases enormously. To show how important being with another person is, how much talking and spending time together bring to our lives and how short and volatile life is.
I know that my work inspires them to stop in the rush of everyday life. It helps them find the joy of being with their loved ones and other people. When working with volunteers, I notice changes in their assessments and perception of the world. I often hear that volunteers reevaluate their lives and see a huge, positive change also in contacts with their loved ones.
What is the transformation you’d like to see in the world?
I would like people to focus more on other people than on things, to smile at each other more often, to respect each other, to be more understanding and empathetic. We are different, but in the end, we realize that nothing is more important than another person. The presence of our loved ones, family, friends, memory and time spent with them. That it is moments of shared conversation and short, beautiful moments that make their lives fulfilled and happy.

What cause is closest to your heart?
The cause most important to me is to provide emergency financial aid to patients and their families, grant scholarships to children from families impacted by pancreatic cancer and support groundbreaking research and clinical trials. My journey began with the devastating loss of my mother to pancreatic cancer, motivating me to turn my grief into a determination to make a difference.
I founded Purple Pansies in 2009, to date, we have raised over $5 million. We are a small, but mighty fully volunteer run organization, that has played a pivotal role in the development of key regimens employed in the treatment of pancreatic cancer today.
I want to transform the experience of individuals and families affected by pancreatic cancer, providing immediate support and empowering them, while also funding critical research and clinical trials to conquer this devastating disease. I would like to see the standard of care for pancreas cancer, like the annual mammogram for breast cancer, or the PCA test for prostate cancer, to have one of the blood tests that are available today be part of the standard of care when people go for physicals.
How does being connected to something bigger than yourself help you see light in the world?
Being connected to something bigger than yourself broadens your perspective, ignites a sense of purpose and meaning, cultivates empathy and compassion, fosters a supportive community, encourages gratitude and hope, promotes personal growth and inspires positive action. Ultimately, this connection helps you see the light in the world by recognizing the potential for positive change and the collective efforts that can illuminate the lives of many.
What is the transformation you’d like to see in the world?
I’d like to see the complete eradication of pancreatic cancer. I envision a world where individuals and families no longer have to suffer from this devastating disease, where early detection and effective treatments are readily available, and where the emotional and financial burdens caused by pancreatic cancer are eliminated. This transformation would bring about immeasurable relief, hope and an improved quality of life for countless individuals and communities worldwide.

What cause is closest to your heart?
Giving people the dignity of clean clothes is a cause that is so important to me. As it stands, 5.6 billion people have to handwash clothes. The burden of hand-washing clothes is disproportionately placed on women and children, who go to lakes, rivers and streams for up to 20 hours a week to hand-wash clothes. Alleviating this burden and back-breaking, unpaid labor is now my life’s work.
I want to transform the way people in developing countries carry out unpaid labor. Modern innovation has disproportionately focused on the comforts of the West and has transformed everyday life. I now want to unlock this for the next billion people around the globe left behind and are eager for high-quality, appropriate solutions.
How does being connected to something bigger than yourself help you see light in the world?
As an engineer, I have the skills and ability to help or hinder the planet. I know what side I want to be on for future generations, and this gives me incredible purpose for something bigger: spreading light into the world. Navjot means “New Light” in Punjabi; I want to be true to my name and live this every day of my life.
What is the transformation you’d like to see in the world?
In my lifetime, I would love a shift in focus of innovation from developed nations to developing nations. This, I feel, will have the most impact on our planet for centuries to come.

What cause is closest to your heart?
I believe in creating a safer world for LGBTQ+ youth of all ages. As a transgender young person, I have been able to thrive because of the support network I have. Everyone deserves that, but too often LGBTQ+ youth don’t have access to that support. I want people to understand that transgender and nonbinary youth, that LGBTQ+ youth, are just like other kids. They thrive with love, support and affirmation.
I want to transform the way people look at gender and the stereotypes that go with it so that all people are freer to show up as themselves. More people showing up fully as themselves makes the world a more vibrant and beautiful place.
How does being connected to something bigger than yourself help you see light in the world?
Being connected to something bigger than myself gives me hope. It shows me how many good people are out there doing good things. That’s so important when current events can be so overwhelming and scary. But we’re never alone, and together we can create a better future.
What is the transformation you’d like to see in the world?
I want us to move beyond labels and boxes so that we can see people around us as human beings instead of issues. When we see the humanity in each other, empathy and understanding grows.

What cause is closest to your heart?
The cause that is most important to me is recognizing the importance of gender and cultural diversity in bringing new dimensions to any enterprise. This commitment has led me to volunteer my time, professional knowledge and resources to Embracing Latina Leadership Alliances (ELLAS), a nonprofit established in 2003 by L’Oréal Paris Women of Worth honoree Pilar Pinel that facilitates academic and leadership opportunities for Latina youth.
I want to transform the way the world thinks about gender equity. I am an advocate for the advancement of young underserved and underrepresented women. As such, my participation and involvement has been to serve as a mentor, advisor, ally and funder. The empowerment of women is all about rights and equitable societies. Empowerment includes the action of raising the status of women through education, awareness, literacy and training as we have done through ELLAS.
How does being connected to something bigger than yourself help you see light in the world?
Connecting the dots for young women. If you can’t visualize yourself in a certain career or role, you won’t pursue it. However, if you see someone of your own gender, ethnicity or background doing something you like, you relate to it. You think, “If they can do it, I can do it.” It’s important that these young ladies see themselves in their role models. That’s why most of our speakers and mentors are Latina, but not all. Again, I want to emphasize that men can also be excellent role models and mentors for young women. ELLAS serves as the “neck” that turns the heads of these young women toward careers that are aligned with their passions.
What is the transformation you’d like to see in the world?
We all have a purpose in life. Once you find that purpose, you fuel others’ passions by pulling them into participating in what they believe in. Being a voice of ELLAS, I’ve connected with people who say “Wow, I wish there had been something like this when I was in high school…” It’s a testament to what we do when some of our past young ladies come back as guest speakers, mentors, advisors, board members or volunteers. Giving back without expecting anything in return and putting in the time and energy commitments has extraordinary rewards.

What cause is closest to your heart?
The causes most important to me are food insecurity and climate change. These issues are becoming increasingly prevalent and are affecting more people globally. It is vital that these issues are addressed in the status quo.
I want to transform food waste management systems.
How does being connected to something bigger than yourself help you see light in the world?
Knowing that I am connected to something bigger than myself gives me a sense of purpose knowing that I am working to create a better world for everyone.
What is the transformation you’d like to see in the world?
I would like to see composting and food recovery programs implemented systemically in all schools and businesses.

What cause is closest to your heart?
Being a resource for citizens of the rural community is closest to my heart because there is no limit to the work we do in the community. We host back to school drives, fund scholarships for high school students and organize college tours, prepare and donate food boxes, offer a community pantry and resource closet of hygiene supplies, etc. The cause most important to me is bridging the gap between financial literacy and our citizens.
I want to transform the stigma of our rural area.
How does being connected to something bigger than yourself help you see light in the world?
I want it to be known as a town of citizens that work together for a purpose that is greater than us. Knowing that we are working for a purpose larger than ourselves has motivated me to be the change I want to see as I shine God’s light upon others.
What is the transformation you’d like to see in the world?
In this world, I would like to see other young men and women volunteering because sometimes investing time is better than investing money.
Amplifying Change: The Inspiring Work of the 2023 George H.W. Bush Points of Light Awards

Rebecca & Christyn Taylor: United in Hope and Resilience
embody hope and resilience, fueling their dedication to supporting children battling pediatric pancreatitis. Despite Rebecca’s personal health challenges, which involved numerous surgeries and considerable medical treatment, her spirit remained undeterred. Supported by her mother Christyn, Rebecca morphed her suffering into hope, initiating “
,” a nonprofit organization dedicated solely to pediatric pancreatitis, and launching a global movement for change.
The organization has broken ground in fostering research partnerships with global entities and facilitating advancements in medical care. Leveraging the power of storytelling through “Rebecca’s Wish: The Documentary,” they have showcased the courage and determination of young individuals battling the disease. The Taylor duo has infused hope into the community through medical grants, scholarships and awareness campaigns. Their journey stands as a testament to the transformative power of resilience, portraying the spirit of unity and the unyielding determination to foster change in the face of adversity, illuminating the path for many others.
The impact of these honorees resides in President Bush’s legacy of service and that we all have something to give. Every action matters, big or small. We can find meaning and reward by serving some higher purpose than ourselves. Each story –spanning art, politics and health – resonates deeply with a shared commitment to fostering goodwill. The experiences and actions of these individuals remind us of the power of President Bush’s vision for a better world.

It’s his success in his professional life that propelled him into his service. As an accomplished lawyer and co-founding partner at Bathgate, Wegener, and Wolf P.C., his practice areas include real estate, business transactions, municipal law, mergers and acquisitions, wills, trusts and estates, patent infringement litigation and class actions. But his proudest accomplishment may be one of his quietest. His firm offers scholarships to children of staff. When the COVID-19 pandemic shut down the court system, and no revenue was coming in, he continued to support the students he had committed to.
“If a person has been blessed, then they have an obligation to contribute, to share their time and energy and resources and ideas,” said Bathgate.
Bathgate’s impact has been far and wide, reaching across the aisle and the country through his roles on several boards of directors, including the Board of Visitors at the University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center, Houston; a Council Member of The Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars, Washington, D.C.; the National Committee of the Arts of the Kennedy Center, Washington, D.C.; The Board of Boy Scouts of America, New York Council; and the Board of Directors of the New Jersey Performing Arts Center, Newark.When asked how he became involved and what motivated him to stay engaged, he had a simple answer.
“I’ve always said yes to things,” Bathgate said.
He recounted the story of getting out of law school and starting his first job in his hometown. The phone rang, and an assemblyman from Ocean County asked him to be the driver for the assemblyman and a gubernatorial candidate. Bathgate said yes, and the trio ended up in a picture on the front page of the newspaper.
He went on to get involved with the Boy Scouts and his local community college. He became president of the animal shelter in Ocean County and worked to raise funds for it. He helped raise campaign funds for gubernatorial candidates by rallying donors. All those efforts led to his becoming parliamentarian of the New Jersey State Assembly when he was just 29 years old.
Twelve years later, he would host a fundraiser for presidential candidate George H.W. Bush. Bush was a champion of volunteerism and community service, and Bathgate recognized something in him that he knew would resonate with people. Bush’s values and approach to service stood out, and Bathgate knew Bush was poised to serve the country. And he was right because, not only did Bush become America’s forty-first president, but he later went on to found Points of Light, with a mission that champions civic engagement around the world.
“One of the best things Points of Light does is shows, on the international stage, how much American volunteerism is alive and well,” Bathgate explained. “In other countries, the government might pay for arts centers, hospitals, museums. In America, philanthropic support is the architecture of these places, and volunteers give their time to operate them.”
With the backbone of philanthropic support and giving his time to causes he cares about, Bathgate has built a legacy of service throughout his lifetime. When asked how he measures the impact of service and ensures his efforts are making a meaningful difference, Bathgate pointed to perseverance.
“It’s a continuum,” he said. “You don’t get to a goal and then you’re done. You move on to the next one. There’s always a new goal to reach for. You donate time, energy, resources.”
And when it comes to his best advice to share with someone who is interested in getting involved in community service, he had three tips.
“Number one, be polite and be kind. Number two, always be on time,” he advised. “Number three, say yes to things. Get involved.”

Maurice Greenberg Leads Organization to Support Initiatives Across the Globe
The George H.W. Bush Points of Light Awards took place on October 24, 2022. This event, our fourth annual celebration, honored individuals who are driving measurable and sustained change in their communities and beyond. One of this year’s honorees is Maurice R. “Hank” Greenberg, chairman and CEO of Starr Insurance Companies, a global insurance and investment organization founded by Cornelius Vander Starr in 1919 in Shanghai, China. A decorated United States Army veteran, he served in both World War II and the Korean Conflict, rising to the rank of Captain and serving as a company commander. Now, his efforts are focused on the business and philanthropic sectors.
Mr. Greenberg retired as Chairman and CEO of American International Group (AIG), which became the first fully licensed foreign insurance company in China. Under his nearly 40 years of leadership, AIG grew from an initial market value of $300 million to $180 billion, becoming the largest insurance company in the world.
Currently, he serves as chair of The Starr Foundation, a philanthropic organization initially funded by Cornelius Vander Starr’s estate. The Starr Foundation has now grown to become one of the largest private foundations in the United States, awarding more than $3.8 billion in grants worldwide to a wide variety of academic, medical, cultural and public policy organizations around the world.
Among his numerous appointments, Mr. Greenberg also served as vice chairman of the National Committee on United States-China Relations, honorary vice chairman of the Council on Foreign Relations and as a member of the Board of the US-China Business Council.
In 1990, he was appointed by Zhu Rongji as Shanghai’s first chairman of the International Business Leaders’ Advisory Council (IBLAC). Greenberg has been named an honorary citizen of Shanghai and was appointed as a Senior Economic Advisor to the Beijing Municipal Government.
Mr. Greenberg holds many awards, having been presented with the Friendship Medal for Contribution to China’s Reform by President Xi Jinping in 2018 – one of only two Americans among 10 foreign leaders to receive this honor.

The George H.W. Bush Points of Light Awards brings a long-standing presidential legacy, as Points of Light was founded by President George H.W. Bush himself. Former Presidents Jimmy Carter, Bill Clinton, George W. Bush and Barack Obama once again served as honorary co-chairs of the event, with Barbara Bush, Jenna Bush Hager, Lauren Bush Lauren, Mike and Jacquelyne Love, Wendy Stapleton and Andy and Marie Unanue serving as co-chairs for this year’s in-person event. Linsey Davis, ABC News anchor and correspondent, was the emcee.

The evening featured a beautiful performance by Grammy Award-winning saxophonist and composer duo, Branford Marsalis with Joey Calderazzo. Ukrainian singer and 2022 Grammy performer Mika Newton wowed the audience with her voice and moving performance.

José Andrés is an internationally recognized culinary innovator, New York Times bestselling author, educator and humanitarian. He was named one of Time Magazine’s “100 Most Influential People” in both 2012 and 2018 and awarded the 2015 National Humanities Medal from President Barack Obama.
As the chef/owner of the award-winning José Andrés Group, Andrés has been a pioneer of Spanish tapas in the United States and is also known for his groundbreaking avant-garde cuisine. Recently launched in 2021, José Andrés Media specializes in television, books, podcasts, and digital content with a focus on food- and culture-related stories. As a naturalized citizen originally from Spain, Andrés has also been a tireless advocate for immigration reform.
Andrés’ nonprofit,World Central Kitchen, has provided essential goods and services in the realm of disaster relief. FollowingHurricane Ian, the organization provided more than 800,000 meals in just the two weeks to the people of Florida. The team has continued to provide meals to people in crisis on six different continents, including responding to the war in Ukraine by providing hundreds of millions of meals to displaced people.
World Central Kitchen has also partnered with thousands of restaurants, farmers and community leaders around the country to combat food and nutrition insecurity, laying the groundwork for smarter national food policy.
Points of Light is proud to recognize Andrés as a changemaker who is driving significant and sustained impact through his efforts.
The Future is Bright: The George H.W. Bush Points of Light Awards Gala
I love the feeling after you’ve been to an amazing party, where you’ve really connected to something meaningful. Your soul feels full – it’s the kind of good vibe that stays with you for days.
On Thursday evening, we celebrated The George H.W. Bush Points of Light Awards at a beautiful gala at the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum. It was a gorgeous event, honoring the legacy of our founder, President George H.W. Bush, and three incredible honorees who exemplify his legacy through their own work.
It was a brilliant evening. Overlooking the New York City skyline at sunset, the excitement and energy of the guests was palpable when entering the space. Everyone in the room seemed to be buzzing, and with the story of each honoree, the pride and awe in the room grew.
My main take away?
The future is bright.

Our honorees seemingly had not much in common. A country music legend. A millennial from a rural Iowa community. A 12-year-old from Los Angeles. But what they did share was a passion and a belief in the power of people to change the world.
, a superstar country music legend, was honored with The Inaugural George H.W. Bush Award for Caring and Compassion. In 1999, Brooks co-founded the Teammates for Kids Foundation with the mission of giving all kids, all around the world, an even start. Additionally, alongside wife Trisha Yearwood, Garth has also volunteered with Habitat for Humanity for more than a decade.
, inspired by her experiences as a food pantry volunteer, created the MEANS Database as a freshman at American University. The innovative nonprofit has rerouted more than 2.2 million pounds of excess food to communities in need across the United States, getting it into the hands of hungry people instead of into the trash.
was just 8 years old when she was inspired to start Khloe Kares to address the issue homelessness in her Los Angeles community. Now 12 years old, Thompson has distributed more than 5,000 handmade “Kare Bags” filled with socks, underwear, and a two- to three-month supply of toiletries and other necessities.
These three individuals – from completely different backgrounds, generations, locations – all saw an issue, and took action where and how they could. They didn’t wait or think it was too big. They made a change, where they could, how they could, one day at a time.
President Bill Clinton opened the evening by sharing personal stories about his relationship with President George H.W. Bush, and their shared commitment to service. We also celebrated our global impact. A special message from Boris Johnson, prime minister of the United Kingdom, highlighted the U.K. Point of Light Award and the Commonwealth Point of Light Award, and the profound impact recognition has in motivating and inspiring individuals to do good. And we were joined by dignitaries from many countries around the world, demonstrating that what unites us is far greater that what divides us.
Points of Light believes in the power of people to create a world where empathy defeats apathy – where it is impossible for people to sit on the sidelines.
After this wonderful evening, I believe, now more than ever, that the future is in the right hands to make this vision a reality.
